It is one thing to know the opposing unit enough to be good at game planning your unit, but a whole different level of knowledge to game plan and call the plays for the opposing unit
EDIT: Somehow I totally messed up the formatting on this reply... clear evidence that I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer... so feel free to factor that in when you read my reply
LOL, be patient with me here, BIH. Humor me... and think about this objectively with an open mind. If a person has invested 35+ years putting offenses under a microscope (and I mean player-by-player, snap by snap, scheme by scheme, day by day, team by team) how could that guy NOT intimately know every minuscule piece of an offense - even more - there would not be an offensive scheme that person had not dissected and studied. It would be your entire life of study professionally.
These guys would have spent thousands and thousands of hours studying offenses on film - and then live in games, year after year after year.
There is not a call to be made that these guys haven't seen a zillion times and game planned for. It just stands to reason they can call those plays... and probably damned effectively because they dead-bang KNOW the ramifications upon an opposing defense, due to having lived that on the OTHER side of the ball. We fans (and I include myself here, definitely) think we know all about this stuff. But we don't. I really have zero doubt a successful guy like coach Eberflus would know offenses inside-and-out.

idk, look no further than Matt Patricia. He did great things as DC with Patriots during the SB runs. Not so great as Lions HC, returned to Patriots and somehow became OC. He sucked 🤣 as OC and pretty much destroyed there young QB. I here your argument but not holding much water.

My only point that I am trying to make is not that a D coach should be an OC. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. My point is that a good head coach who has a defense background is not without considerable knowledge of the entire game, offense, defense and special teams. And they have historically been some of the greatest head coaches in the history of the NFL. There are some current HCs with D backgrounds who are performing really well too. John Harbaugh and Houston's DeMeco Ryans come immediately to mind. Harbaugh was also a special teams coordinator too. And the Hall of Fame has good examples too. For that matter, Bill Belichick was a D head coach too.
FYI: Jones signing in ARI was ranked by one outlet as the worst FA signing this off-season. Massive overpay for a rotational player. I think Pickens or Dexter steps in a replaces Jones without a hitch.
I agree. I am expecting both to take big steps forward this year. I saw a pic of Dexter on Twitter showing off the results of a year in a NFL training program.
JABF, I understood where you were going, but until you have done it, you haven’t done it. Even OCs that have been calling plays for years usually can’t be said to be innovative. Most are just the OC version of a JAG. Most only last a few years. To say that a guy who has never done it even if immersed in knowing offense so they call the defense is not the same. At least that is my belief

+1 Yeah, you're probably right. And I have to admit that I am biased about our HC. I really like the guy. And that does color my view.
