Reading this helped explain the move... it makes more sense to spend the 5th round pick on him:
LINK Ryan Bates trade signals two things about Bears' 2024 offseason path The Bears' trade for Ryan Bates gives them flexibility in free agency and the NFL draft
It is very possible that Bates is a reserve for all three interior position. But, imo this is a dumb move, similar to last years Feeney. Why would you give your 5th for a guy of this quality when you could draft similar in rd 5 and have him on a much cheaper deal. These kind of deals make me wonder about Poles.
Cause you don't know that a 5th round pick will be similar. The odds are that 5th round pick won't be similar, they'll be worse.
Brax was a 5th round pick, so wouldn’t be Poles first hit in 5th round. Anyway, when the dust settles after training camp, it will be interesting to see where Bates lands on the depth chart. Ditto for J. Carter and Doug Kramer. Who’s the backup, and who’s the backup to the backup?

Poles seems to me to be a GM who likes value signings in FA. I actually like that. Doesn't mean all will work out but it does mean you don't get saddled with burdensome contracts when they don't.
Yes, this is just my opinion but I feel like its rare that big-money FAs pan out as well as you would hope. I'm not saying NEVER, just saying keep your emotions in check. Every fan wants their team to sign the 2 or 3 biggest names in every FA and that rarely works out well.
CHGO yesterday put out a list of 5 potential Bears FA signings and only 1 was an "A-list player" (Wilkins). And I think Poles sees it similarly.
I will take value signings over "Jimmy Graham" FA deals.

Noah Sewell, Terrell Smith, and Dom Rob were also 5th round picks. Obviously its too early to tell about Sewell and Smith, but I think we know Dom Rob isn't an answer a defensive end for us. Potential depth piece, maybe. Sewell is probably a special teamer and back up...Smith may turn into something more.

Smith played pretty well last year. Opponents only had a 58% completion rate against him — better than Stevenson (65%). NFL average is 64%. Jaylon Johnson is 56%.

Bit of a limited sample size there. He saw a whopping 43 targets on the 200 some odd pass snaps he had. Stevenson saw nearly 3 times that(110 targets) in the well over 500 pass snaps he had. Smith played ok...if you watched the actual film instead of just his stats you'd know he had some serious issues in coverage last year too.

He got torched pretty badly late in the year in man coverage. They should give him looks at S this TC.

They both had some serious issues in coverage, but JABF assures me they were rookies and will improve.

Ummm....Stevenson did improve as the year went on. Did you actually watch any of these games? Did you miss him get NFC Defensive Player of the Week in week 17? Its ok to give up the bit when its no longer a thing.
