That does make sense. I'm not trying to be critical of the move, so much as to try and understand it. I did think that our OL needed better quality depth... but I also didn't know how good or bad the young guys were that we already had (practice squad developmental guys in particular). Maybe our OL depth guys are worse than I thought, and the developmental guys didn't develop. Anyway, I did go back and read Ryan Bates draft profile (nobody ended up drafting him). The scouting report on him was brutal. LINK
Yeah, you don't want to read too much into it. I agree. LOL, but just scratching my bald head this morning wondering about the move a bit :-)
I know a 5th is not much but still seems too much. Almost seems like they are fixated on this guy. They couldn’t get him before and now they won their little battle with Buffalo. I imagine Buffalo is doing backflips over this
One thing I did hear last night, while listening to the comments on the move... somewhere I heard that this guy is very athletic. He actually was a LT (and RT) at Penn State. He fits the profile that the Bears are trying to have in their offensive linemen - fast, atheletic outside zone blocking guys. The guy sounds like a good guy and a grinder who is still ascending. He has starting experience - including post-season starting experience. So maybe this is a great move if the investment is a 5th round pick. He surely is worth that. Here's an interesting link about him LINK.

I wonder what this means for Ja’Tyre Carter? He played 10 games and started 2 in 2023.
Interesting. And I agree with Poles probably not liking only having 5 picks in the draft. For a guy that wants to build using the draft, that means he is almost for sure moving down. He doesn't have anything in the 2nd so, I think he is moving down with one of the first two picks. He can get an impact player at each of those positions, so was hoping he would use them, but I can't see him sticking with 5 picks.
In a way, getting a good center in the 5th round is a great use of the 5th round pick. But of course, he is more expensive and older than a C draft pick. Didn't see this coming, but then that's why I don't even think about doing mocks. They are going to do what they do and you won't know til they do it, so why not just wait til they do it?
Poles traded a 6th for Dan Feeney last year and he sucked. He likes throwing late round picks at the OL it seems. I feel like Poles must be confident he's gonna get something for Fields, though it sounds like it's gonna be way less than we had hoped for, and I think this increases the odds he's gonna trade down from #9. Odunze blew people away at the Combine so unfortunately it looks like he isn't gonna make it to 9. Would have been better for us if he had run a little slower.
Re Bates, this guy is a cheaper Whitehair replacement. He's probably a backup swing iOL who can maybe compete to start at C depending on how the draft goes.
What makes me nervous is that Poles just signed Doug Kramer to a reserve/future contract. So if he’s the backup center, why do we need another one? Or is Bates all we’re going to get, and he’s not planning to make a serious bid for Cushenberry? Or whatever is still on the board third round?
It is very possible that Bates is a reserve for all three interior position. But, imo this is a dumb move, similar to last years Feeney. Why would you give your 5th for a guy of this quality when you could draft similar in rd 5 and have him on a much cheaper deal. These kind of deals make me wonder about Poles.
Cause you don't know that a 5th round pick will be similar. The odds are that 5th round pick won't be similar, they'll be worse.

Poles seems to me to be a GM who likes value signings in FA. I actually like that. Doesn't mean all will work out but it does mean you don't get saddled with burdensome contracts when they don't.
Yes, this is just my opinion but I feel like its rare that big-money FAs pan out as well as you would hope. I'm not saying NEVER, just saying keep your emotions in check. Every fan wants their team to sign the 2 or 3 biggest names in every FA and that rarely works out well.
CHGO yesterday put out a list of 5 potential Bears FA signings and only 1 was an "A-list player" (Wilkins). And I think Poles sees it similarly.

I don't know about back flips...they're $40 mill OVER the cap right now. They need salary relief. This move clears them of his salary and gets them an extra $700K towards getting under. They're going to try and rework some contracts too. When you need cap space sometimes you have to do things you'd rather not do.

Thats all that this is. When we start worrying about 5th round picks we are deep in the woods. I'm not saying you can't find a HOF/GOAT C/G in the 5th, just that, well, you won't.
Anyone that has been on and off the PS for multiple seasons (like Kramer) are most likely not going to be factors any time soon. The fact no one has poached the PS means....they aren't seen as viable NFL replacement level options. But Bates is. I don't think Buffalo is celebrating. I think they took a calculated risk that they have a replacement depth iOL guy or they can find one this year. Is that worth a 5th? Maybe, with out looking name me a 5th round iOL? I can't.

Agree on the cost. Would have liked to see a 5th for Bates + a 6th.
