He was a backup last year. He only got 35 snaps. The year before that he was a RG. Yeah, this is a depth player at best, and not too impressed.
A good trade for the Bills. They get a draft pick and unload $4 million.
One thing that came to mind when I read we traded for him, was wondering how we don't already have a developing guy who can play at this guy's level. He's an undrafted guy who played 35 snaps last year as a backup. The year before he did get more play as a RG... but couldn't break into the starting lineup this year. I would have hoped that in year-3 of Poles being here, we would have a backup guy (maybe a practice squad guy) this good, right? But I guess not.

What makes me nervous is that Poles just signed Doug Kramer to a reserve/future contract. So if he’s the backup center, why do we need another one? Or is Bates all we’re going to get, and he’s not planning to make a serious bid for Cushenberry? Or whatever is still on the board third round?

It is very possible that Bates is a reserve for all three interior position. But, imo this is a dumb move, similar to last years Feeney. Why would you give your 5th for a guy of this quality when you could draft similar in rd 5 and have him on a much cheaper deal. These kind of deals make me wonder about Poles.
I am not sure if this is a great depth signing for 5th rounder and relatively low cost($8M). Or is he a hedge bet if a upgrade OC option does not pan out. Being able to.play all 3 interior OL positions and a Very high RAS Score, upper 9s, seems to meet Poles previous DNA.
Meh. Odd of actually picking starter or depth on the OL with a 5th round pick are slim. Odds of picking a rookie OL with a 5th round pick that can actually start if someone gets injured are slim. We hammer the Bears for not having depth and then when they spend a reasonable pick on depth we get our underwear in a knot.
As I see it Bates + experience he has + salary >>>>> 5th round OL-rookie + salary.
Doesn't move the needle at all. He's a depth piece who can play RG-C-LG. Cap went up $25 mil more than expected.

That does make sense. I'm not trying to be critical of the move, so much as to try and understand it. I did think that our OL needed better quality depth... but I also didn't know how good or bad the young guys were that we already had (practice squad developmental guys in particular). Maybe our OL depth guys are worse than I thought, and the developmental guys didn't develop. Anyway, I did go back and read Ryan Bates draft profile (nobody ended up drafting him). The scouting report on him was brutal. LINK
Yeah, you don't want to read too much into it. I agree. LOL, but just scratching my bald head this morning wondering about the move a bit :-)
He can try and trade the 9th pick to garner a few picks. I don't think he's trading 1 overall. QB is to needed on this team.
I agree with you. My hope is that when all of the dust settles, the Bears will have invested in the supporting offense talent so that the new kid can develop into a solid franchise quarterback. The Bears lack draft picks now, after the 1st round. And when I look over the projected FA guys, there are not a lot of quality people at some positions. In light of all of this, I don't want to see the defense get that #9 pick.

I know a 5th is not much but still seems too much. Almost seems like they are fixated on this guy. They couldn’t get him before and now they won their little battle with Buffalo. I imagine Buffalo is doing backflips over this
