They also drafted Trey Lance. Motm posted the research on this. The QB drafted #1 has a 30% failure rate. For the rest of the entire first round it is about 50%, and it doesn’t matter much where you pick in the first round. You can hit gold outside the first round, so if you need a QB, go ahead and buy a lottery ticket.
It is just so very hard to get this right. It's not like the Bears want to get it wrong. Same with the rest of the NFL... so many many teams can't get it right either. We all talk about percentages of this or that. But in the end it all comes down to the fact that the Bears have failed decade after decade to get it done. This is why I hate hearing that "can't miss" thing thrown around. Yes, the Bears could miss. Again.
Well, per the Flus decision, we know that they value consistency.

Maybe our luck will change this time. You never know.

This is going to be VERY interesting as to how Poles navigates this. Assuming he uses the first pick, He has the ninth pick and none in the second with MANY needs. Some that are highly sought after positions such as WR, DE, and DT. He can trade down, but then probably won't get a highly rated guy at any of those positions. And those are not our only needs. C at the very least and you could argue more depth on both O and D lines, as well as the backfield.
But, if he actually hits on a QB, we will have two more firsts next year and hopefully he can get a 2nd for JF. He can definitely fill some holes this year (FA is going to play into this and while he has had more hits than misses on FA, he is kinds spotty there). He is going to have to evaluate well and get some of these guys that perform better than first rounders in the later rounds. Happens every year, but normally teams really don't know who they are going to be. But as long as we hit on the QB and he adds two or three impact players via the draft and FA, we will be a better team. But remember, that was with a QB that knew the system. There is no guarantee that at first ANY new QB will be as good as JF on his last part of the season last year. Of course the goal is that he would be much better in the end. We don't know that timeline so next year could be another tough year despite the talent we have. We might not be a loaded team, but we are not a bad team and should be better.
+1 Often I think about how every player and team is unique. Championship teams find a way to win, and it may be different than other teams who have won SB's before them. It does get a bit tiresome when someone points to a team/player and says to look at that - as if it were easy for ANYONE to replicate that. LOL. It's not possible because every situation is unique.
I am hoping that I get a better feeling about Flus this year. I have to be honest, he is not a guy that I am excited about being the Bears HC.
I agree, me neither
I think they should have reset the clock and aligned HC-OC-QB all together.

I get what you are saying and there is merit to that - unless Warren and Poles truly believe this is a guy who is improving/developing and they believe he is going to be a great head coach here. If they truly believe that then you don't fire the guy.

I honestly believe that poles let is personal relationship color his decision. It happens. As a matter of fact, I think it is more the norm. It is REALLY hard to fire a friend.

I don't see evidence of this. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. In this case I do believe Poles believes that Eberflus is the guy to get us to where we need to go. Eberflus, as a first time head coach had a learning curve to climb. Mistakes were made. Poles made them too as a first time GM. But it sure looks like they both are making progress (Eberflus definitely was doing better that last half of the season). Think about this. The Bears hire this 1st time head coach and promptly choose the nuclear option and totally blow up the roster. Our best players were let go too, so the team could get out of cap hell. So we have this greener-than-a-gourd rookie head coach with a roster that looks like scorched earth - pretty much just a wisp of smoke left where a team once was. Then last year he takes a significant (I believe anyway) step forward as a head coach... the team wins more games, he has the defense playing as a top-5 in the entire NFL defense that last half of the season - where just the year before he had the teardown.
I think that is damned impressive.
Why on earth would a sane person fire that guy at this point? What has he done to deserve being fired? This team is in position to be a good playoff team THIS year. This week Poles said that is where the bar is set now for the 2024 team. I 100% believe we have the head coach to hit that milestone. I "get it" that we read about how we have to have Harbaugh to win, or that we have to have an offense HC to win. I do not believe that. I don't. I think we have our coach who can get us to a Super Bowl if we are just patient with him. Again, he has had 1 tank season with a blown up roster, and the 1st year of a multi-year rebuild. The team is getting better. It should ascend a lot more this 2nd season of the rebuild. Hey, if the guy craps the bed, then I am all-in on firing him. But not now. I'm pumped right now. Very optimistic.

JABF, I don't know that you WOULD see any evidence of that. What sort of evidence would ever make it to the public realm? Any if that criteria (getting better) was sufficient for Flus, then what is the criteria for Fields? Didn't the success (or failure) of one affect the other? And if the improvement was enough to justify one, why not the other? Too many inconsistencies for me on this. And again, I am with just everybody on this. I want the best solution (and QB) here. I just don't know what it is. It may seem I only want Fields, but that's not true. I defend him because I think the blame leveled on him is unfair. If they go to Williams and he is a huge success, I will be the first one to applaud the change. I just want success.

I just think that the HC job is a separate and different one than the QB job. It should be graded differently. Eberflus brought his team through a firestorm situation and it improved. I love what he has done on defense and believe we will see the offense take a similar step forward in this year-2 of the rebuild. This morning I was thinking that not only did the team improve, but it was really cool to see how Eberflus held that team together through the nuclear blowup and last season too. Most coaches could not have done what Eberflus did. I think we have a really good HC now. And I respect Poles for having the courage to do the right thing here - it wasn't the sexy move to placate fans, but (I believe) was the best move. I see some mighty good defensive minded HC's in the league (always have been). Eberflus can be a good HC for us... I think he's already on his way in that regard.
