I posted this in another thread, but it could pertain to this discussion also. Matt Barkley originally was projected to be a 1st round draft pick QB. In fact, at one point he was projected to be the #1 overall pick for the 2013 NFL draft - but he chose to play at USC his last year, got injured, and that dropped him to a 4th round pick. If he had come out that early draft, he could have been that year's Kizer, Trubisky or Watson.
We signed him off the street in September.
LOL, I guess I am glad I am not Ryan Pace this year, because drafting a QB is a Bear (pun intended) :-)
Barkley then decided to return to USC for his senior season.[41] As early as April 2012, he was projected the No. 1 overall pick for the 2013 NFL Draft.[42][43][44] However, one month prior to the draft, Barkley's draft stock had fallen with ESPN draft analysts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay projecting Barkley to fall out of the first round.[45] Due to his shoulder injury, Barkley did not throw in the Indianapolis NFL Scouting Combine and instead took medical tests on his shoulder.[46]
So we already have a 1st round developmental QB. We're good to go! No reaching for QBs... BPA all the way!

LOL, it just makes us realize that all these draft sources that we quote as fans aren't worth much if anything. The draft is a crap shoot at best.
If they do not feel any of the top QBs are worth a top 5 pick then they should not be drafting one. They should be taking the best player/difference maker. It may be one of those years where all the QBs are only good enough to be back ups. I don't want to use a top 5 draft pick on a back up.
I would be sick if we blew a draft pick this high on a guy who eventually ended up being a career backup. Whatever position gets drafted this year by us with this top-5 pick, my hope is that we get an absolute stud. We probably won't draft this high for a long time to come. At least I hope not. Consequently, this top-5 pick is a "big deal" and a rare Bears opportunity to get somebody very very special.

Cmon Bears. Don't blow this :-)
The problem is if the Bears do take a QB with their first pick the odds are he's going to be a back up. Not necessarily because the Bears made a bad choice but more so because that's just how hard it is to draft a great QB. I'm not for sure but I would think more first round QBs fail than any other position drafted in the first round. That has a lot to do with it being the most difficult and important position and most QBs getting drafted in the first are going to bad teams.

I agree, but my hope is that our luck changes and Pace hits a home run in the draft. Other positions bust too. LOL, the Bears don't discriminate on the busts. They've spread them around to multiple positions over the years.
One other thing was nagging at me when I thought about this drafting a QB. If the top few QB's taken this coming year in the draft are more like 2nd round talents in past years, then would we be wise to just draft a 2nd round QB? What if there really isn't that much difference between the top pick or two, and what would be available to us (since we have a super high second round draft position this year). If we draft at #5 of the second round, that's still pretty darned high.
If we draft at #5, my gut feeling is that the best QB in this draft may be gone off the board anyway. Maybe the top two are gone. If so, then do we grab the 3rd best QB with our top-5 of the draft pick? Or try for a QB with the #37th pick of the draft (our 2nd round pick)?

Your concerns are mine as well. I have said the same exact thing about drafting a QB during an off year. This is why the front office gets paid the big bucks to determine who is good and who's not.
If the top defensive guys are gone and a stud OT is there would you still only want the Bears to take a defensive player?
Nope, go for the best OT but I don't know if that OT is really worth the #4 overall pick.
That guy being Cam Robinson. OT is still a huge need here.
Ok, so you're finally admitting that it's not a must to draft a defensive player no matter what now. You're saying the Bears should take the best player available as long as it's a major position of need.
