The other day I was looking through the past 50 years of NFL draft history. Some years NO quarterback ultimately made it in the NFL as a decent starter. None. Some years ARE bad draft years for QB's.
Think about that for a minute.
Ultimately, the only scouting report that matters is the Bears scouting department and Ryan Pace. But if they have those QB's rated as being pretty mediocre, and there is a stud player - THAT THEY HAVE PROJECTED TO BE A STUD - then do you pick the impact stud player? Or just grab a QB for the hell of it?
I am reading different from the scouts. As of yesterday this is CBS' draft scout report. Trubisky is #4. Kizer is 9th. Watson isn't even in the top-10.
Walter Football's latest scouting report has Trubinsky going as late as the 3rd round (LINK) and Watson as late as the 4th round (LINK).
To be fair, most scouts also think Peppers is one of the best players this year. He clearly isn't. butkus3595 back me up here please lol
And what's up with Walter Football? Trub 3rd, Watson 4th rd? Are they crazy? Don't they realize how many teams need a new starting QB right now?
Bears, 49ers, Browns and Bills. Also keep in mind Eli, Brees and Rivers aren't getting any younger. These teams should really start looking for their replacements.
Sure is a loaded question when you assume the QBs are mediocre.
Johnathan Allen could be a discussion, otherwise...quarterback.
My point (I may not be making it clearly) is not that I am judging the QB's as being poor quality this year. My point that I am trying to make is based on "what if the Bears scouting department - and Ryan Pace - feel these are mediocre QB's this year, and there is a non-QB, true impact player available to them when they pick, who do you pick?"
It is an "out there" what-if question, I guess. But what if?

I 100% agree with you. Teams will draft these QB's sky-high. All will go in the 1st round, and maybe all go in the top-10 of the first round.
But that doesn't (necessarily) mean they are that good. We see this with QB's all the time. Time after time after time after time a QB is over-drafted. I "get it" that is is Economics-101, and a "supply and demand" thing. If you want one. You sometimes overpay for one. It still doesn't make it a smart move for a team like the Bears who need true impact players. The roster is screaming for true impact players... so, maybe an impact player (like a perennial All-Pro defensive guy) would help the team more than a QB who has 2nd round talent in a normal year, but we blow a top-5 draft pick on him.
If Pace and his scouting department look at it that way, then they really F'd up by not drafting one in the last 2 drafts now haven't they; b/c they are now forced into taking one(which btw I have been saying he did, and Emery before him, and Angelo before them).
Here's is what is going to happen in the draft, and watch as all these scouting reports completely change as the draft actually comes close and after the combine/pro days, 2 qb's are going to get taken in the top 5 and another 1 or 2 will get taken in the mid to late 1st round. Weather that's the Bears, or if those 2 qb's get taken before them is yet to be seen.
If they do not feel any of the top QBs are worth a top 5 pick then they should not be drafting one. They should be taking the best player/difference maker. It may be one of those years where all the QBs are only good enough to be back ups. I don't want to use a top 5 draft pick on a back up.

Ugh! The hype around this kid is un-freaking-real!!! I get it...he's a physical freak...he'll probably run a 4.4 to 4.3 at the combine, but defensively he's just not very good. I'll run it down for you:
He ranked:
32nd in the Big 10 in tackles 7th in the Big 10 in tackles for a loss Tied for 27th in the Big 10 for sacks Tied for 35th in the Big 10 for interceptions(he only had 1....IN HIS WHOLE CAREER!!!!!) Outside of the top 20 in the Big 10 for passes broken up(He only had 1!!!!!!) He had 0 forced fumbles 0 fumble recoveries 0 defensive TD's
And this kid is a top 5 pick???!!!! Get the **** outta here! Now...having said that, offensively he's one of the best I've ever seen. If a team drafts him and puts him on offense it makes sense...but as a defensive player? I wouldn't draft him in the first 3 rounds...and thats being nice.
I posted this in another thread, but it could pertain to this discussion also. Matt Barkley originally was projected to be a 1st round draft pick QB. In fact, at one point he was projected to be the #1 overall pick for the 2013 NFL draft - but he chose to play at USC his last year, got injured, and that dropped him to a 4th round pick. If he had come out that early draft, he could have been that year's Kizer, Trubisky or Watson.
We signed him off the street in September.
LOL, I guess I am glad I am not Ryan Pace this year, because drafting a QB is a Bear (pun intended) :-)
Barkley then decided to return to USC for his senior season.[41] As early as April 2012, he was projected the No. 1 overall pick for the 2013 NFL Draft.[42][43][44] However, one month prior to the draft, Barkley's draft stock had fallen with ESPN draft analysts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay projecting Barkley to fall out of the first round.[45] Due to his shoulder injury, Barkley did not throw in the Indianapolis NFL Scouting Combine and instead took medical tests on his shoulder.[46]

All this will get moved around closer to the draft, Peppers will drop and the QB's will rise and there will be other movement on top of that.
