I agree about his take on the "generational" title. Any player has that chance to be one and of course there "Should" be a greater chance at being so if chosen closer to 1st.
I don't watch college ball so I know squat. But I feel as long as we have a serviceable QB we continue to build and use the one of our 1st's next year ( of course after the double trade down from 1 to 2, the 2 to 3 for MHJ) on a QB if Fields doesn't take that next leap.
That Russell Wilson deal was pretty bad for the Broncos. He's had a great run, especially considering he was a 3rd round drafted QB. But he looks seriously in decline now. His best days are behind him.
Denver really screwed themselves with that deal, I agree. Complete mess over there.
What's your vote for worst deal in recent NFL history?
A) Browns trading what they did for Deshaun Watson while on suspension and then paying him a fully guaranteed contract B) Broncos trading what they did for Wilson hamstringing their cap for years C) Panthers trading DJ Moore and this years #1 overall and then picking the wrong QB
Yeash all 3 of those were terrible!
I agree all three were terrible moves. I think "A" was a dumb move, "B" looked on paper like it was better than it turned out... I think most of us thought Wilson could still play well & he can't, "C" was so risky due to them not realizing that the top QB in a draft is a risky thing... it is always a gamble and as such it can be a losing move (Bears could do it too this year but thankfully they won't be losing DJ Moore too).
If I had to crown one team as making the dumbest move I think it would be "A" the Browns. Even on the surface that move looked like a loser. No way that one was worth it from the inception. LOL, at least with the other two moves you could kind of see some logic. But no logic at all there with the Browns self-inflicted wound of doing the Watson trade.

to counter the first point:
Yes Cousins and Wilson and the usual gang of suspects will sign somewhere, BUT the team left holding the bag either have to turn to the draft OR the Bears (I know there are more options, thats not what I'm discussing.)
IMO, its not the Bears that have to hurry, its the other teams interested in Fields. If ATL wants Fields to avoid drafting QB3/4/5 in the first OR paying what Cousins/Wilson will want, they need to get the deal done before some other team jumps in for the exact same reasons. I also think that the QBs will take their time to sign. Cousins isn't signing anywhere on March 13th. He has to have all the medical tests on his foot, fight for the $45m guaranteed for 2 years that he wants. Cousins is going to take the first offer he gets and show it to every other team that contacts him.
Wilson is the interesting case. I believe Denver is on the hook for his salary if they cut him, the new team could sign him for vet min and Denver has to make up the rest. He'll sign first where he wants to go.
But, what do I know. I thought Grossman was the man!

Good points
Fields is the only "starting caliber" QB available on a cost-controlled contract so I'm hoping Bears have some leverage here. Like you said, Cousins is worth way more and I suspect he's gonna take his sweet time and end up back in Minnesota (they have no one else and are too low to draft a day 1 starter). He has the Vikes over a barrel.
Wilson looks cooked and has no upside left. After him, you're down to guys like Garappolo who can't stay healthy and the scrubs.
Next few weeks should see some action on this front.

+1 And the other options are guys on their way down. Some team will see Fields as a guy who has upside with better coaching and supporting talent than what the Bears gave him. I am already reading the Atlanta folks talking about this being the case. I'm not arguing that it "is" the case. Just pointing out that Fields may be viewed as a guy with upside versus guys like Wilson who are on the downside of their careers. And as you said, he is on a cost-controlled contract.
