That Russell Wilson deal was pretty bad for the Broncos. He's had a great run, especially considering he was a 3rd round drafted QB. But he looks seriously in decline now. His best days are behind him.
yeah.... Unless a team could get him cheap and he was ok with being a BU, I would not go for him

Why do you think he would be ok with being a Brian Urlacher?

Kind of interesting. Nothing really surprising though. Waldron is both looking to the combine and doing his QB homework while exchanging messages with Fields also.
Yeah, but are fields when he has time and a guy open. You give a reason that CW had a dismal defense as to why he held the ball too long, but dismiss any reason for Fields.
Man I really don't want to get into this but yes, Fields is just slow. You can see this on tape again and again. He goes through his progressions too slowly, often makes decisions too slowly (or just doesn't make them), and then has a long wind up to throw which only adds to the problem. It was a noted problem in college and it's still a problem now. This was mitigated some in college because he was playing with a bunch of 1st round draft picks often against teams with lesser talent. It's possible he has gotten a little faster but clearly not enough to compete in the NFL. There isn't an OL in the NFL that is going to consistently be able to give you that time.
When you see CW hold on to the ball it's because he is trying create and maximize the play. You can clearly see on tape he is conscious of where his receivers are and if he passes on shorter routes it's because he thinks there's a bigger play elsewhere. This is where the criticisms that he holds on to the ball a long time and is a "big game hunter" come from. Legitimate criticisms to be sure, but conscious decisions by him and not some limitation of his. And when you add into the fact his defense was routinely giving up 30+ points a game it's understandable why he tended to play that way. It was score or die. I imagine he'll rein that in some if he's on a team with a decent defense. You know like the Bears seem to have now. On top of all that CW has a lighting fast release, can throw it at crazy angles, and has some of the best throwing mechanics of anyone coming out of college.
The pushback on CW continues to baffle me. I can't think of a more picked over 1st round prospect in history. I guess if he acted like Andrew Luck or other dull QB this wouldn't happen. But because he paints his nails and missed a press conference that apparently means he's going to be a bust despite the overwhelming on-field evidence that says otherwise.
THIS ^^^^
The Build-Around-Fields crowd refuses to accept this. They keep saying the OC sucked or the receivers sucked or the Center sucked (all true to a certain extent but not enough to overlook Fields' role).
I'd point to the short throws we saw to the flat last season. Those should be relatively easy by NFL standards. There's no read to make and it's just a take-the-snap-and-throw-it situation. Let's even ignore those that occurred later in games where maybe you could say Getsy had gone to the well too often. How did Fields do on the rest?
Not very well. As Payton just said, you can see why on tape. Not only was his accuracy/precision not what it needed to be but his windup and release are SLOW. That's what turns a 2nd & 4 into a 2nd & 9. Watch Josh Allen make those same throws and tell me if you don't see a bog difference.
Then there are some who will admit to his flaws but instead say "Fields is someone you can win with". Ok, maybe, but I don't want a QB "you can win with". I want a QB you can "win because of".
It may be a small sample size but let's take the season that just ended. San Fran had done exactly what some say to do--they had built the "perfect team" with a good defense, a great playcaller HC, and 4 stud offensive weapons. It's tough to align all those stars just right but somehow they did. And they still couldn't beat the less-perfect team who had the better QB, particularly in the clutch when Fields has been at his worst. Oh and by the way, Purdy is a far better passer right now than JF is.
My position hasn't changed since the day the Bears lost in Green Bay. I defended Fields and hoped he would breakout all last year but I'm done. He had his shot and he didn't do enough to justify passing again on a #1 pick.
Barring an earth-shattering change in the football universe, Williams will be the pick at #1 and Fields will be traded before the draft.

Denver really screwed themselves with that deal, I agree. Complete mess over there.
What's your vote for worst deal in recent NFL history?
A) Browns trading what they did for Deshaun Watson while on suspension and then paying him a fully guaranteed contract B) Broncos trading what they did for Wilson hamstringing their cap for years C) Panthers trading DJ Moore and this years #1 overall and then picking the wrong QB

Yeash all 3 of those were terrible!
I'd say A. That was all on them. On B, I am sure they expected more out of Wilson and that's why they committed so much cap. Getting an evaluation wrong? Hell happens every day 20 times a day On C, same thing. Evaluated the QB wrong. Hell, we may be on the same train ourselves. Actually, we may own the train.

A probably dumbest I agree
B was terrible too cuz it cost them 2 1sts too IIRC.
C hate to say is pretty awful. To trade up #1 and give up a shit ton and then finish worst in the NFL the very next season is also horrible. They didn't just get the evaluation wrong, they drafted a QB who simply lacks the requisite size to play the position.

oh, they were all bad, but if they would have hit on the QB performance on B and C, neither would have been as bad.
