I'm ok with giving Brax another year. But I could see a scenario where Alt is BPA at #9 depending on how the picks go. But Brax is gonna have to improve for next year if he wants to get his money.
That's about the only conundrum on offense for me. Otherwise I know who I am keeping and who I am not. I'd like to see Poles sign 1 and draft 2 receivers (WRs/TEs). I'm done with Velus.
Center should be the highest priority on the OL.
I agree that center is the highest priority, but that is not the only pressing need on the OL. Jenkins can't stay healthy. Nate Davis looked horrible way too often (yeah, what's up with that, right?), and Cody Whitehair is not even backup quality now - our depth sucks. Ja'Tyre Carter in particular struggled... but I know he is another new guy learning his craft. This will be his 3rd season and he needs to show progress this year if he's kept on the roster (his run blocking is beyond bad). I think the Bears need to spend some serious money on a few HIGH QUALITY offensive linemen in addition to drafted a C and G. This year. If Brax doesn't continue to improve then in 2025 that 1st round draft pick needs to be a LT. JMO.
Brax’s pass blocking grade was 81.7. Nothing “average” about that. Ranked 6th in the league. He’s also an excellent run blocker on sweeps.
His overall grade was better than Wright, Dawand Jones, or Broderick Jones.
Yeah, I love the guy, but those grades are not accurate. Especially with OL. Brax has definitely struggled at times. That is what this guy is talking about. He is not a bad player but he is not where he ultimately needs to be to stay at LT here. And I 100% believe he will show improvement this 3rd season. It often takes offensive linemen and TE's too for that matter, 3 seasons to get the game down at the NFL level. That's why I just shake my head when folks are critical of these guys their rookie season in particular. That is notw who they are - or going to be. They are "works in progress" for a few years.
Final PFF grades…
Brax 68.7 Dawand Jones 64.7 Darnell Wright 62.4 Broderick Jones 60.7

Begin with the realization that those PFF grades are garbage. Then go from there. Trust your eyes and what you see. Really, David, PFF is a bad joke when it comes to grading offensive linemen in particular. Again, I like Braxton Jones and believe he will continue to improve. But he struggled in games this year - a lot.

Brax had three bad games. By his own statistical averages, Garrett had an average game against Brax and no sacks. He and Jenkins both were bad in that last Packers game. Packers were fired-up to get into the playoffs. That was a factor across the board in that game. Brax had one other bad game early with penalties and one sack.
The debate on PFF is a dead horse. Been through all that already with Ric.

There were struggles and mistakes and failed plays in every game this year. I love the guy. But, LOL, take off those rose-colored glasses. I usually watch the games multiple times and my #1 focus in ALL games I watch is the offensive line play. Braxton Jones is struggling at times. He knows this better than anyone. He needs to keep grinding and getting better.

He had some rough outings and missed games this year after playing every snap as a rookie. Availability is a big metric in the evaluation process as to who a team commits to long term. Especially with LT, we are talking huge money here for a 2nd contact.
I'm not down on Brax overall, just pointing out he had a mildly disappointing 2023 as did Nate Davis and you'd like to see both bounce back in 2024 before making any commitments.
I agree that WR or maybe Bowers is the bigger target and need with that 2nd 1st round pick and I kinda hope the top LTs go beforehand to push a WR down. Way too soon to know how the top-10 is gonna shake out. Guys will shoot up and fall down as combine and pro-day hype gets going.
Remember last year when that Northwestern DT (AA) blew up the combine and suddenly he was being touted as as a surefire 2nd round (or even late-1st round) pick? Yeah, well he ended up lasting all the way till the 4th round!
Similar thing with JPJ right now in my mind. Read some hype saying he's going in the 1st. Ok....maybe, but Cs rarely get drafted that high. There's been a few but it's rare and JPJ has only 1 year starting experience at C in college. I doubt he will go in the 1st by the time all the hype settles down in April. Bears should have a shot at him if they can wrestle a 2nd round pick away from someone in trade for Fields.
Brock Bowers would be a real get, but we have higher priorities than a TE. Dude is a stud though
BiH, I think Brock Bowers is gonna end up being a high priority target for the Bears with that 2nd 1st rd pick.
DJ Moore people don't realize is only 6' 0" tall. He's a great shifty route runner but not a huge "big target" guy. The Bears also desperately need a receiving TE (essentially a big WR) to bridge the gap between Kmet and Moore.
They tried with Claypool and Tonyan to get that element but both sucked. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they go after BB, especially if Odunze is gone by #9.

+1 Regarding Braxton Jones, I'll say for the zillionth time - I like the guy and am glad we have him - but he is still (very much) a work-in-progress. The guy needs to grind and learn and get better. I think he will get better. I'm just not one to see these guys at either extreme... either perfect or trash but somewhere in between on the performance scale. They (especially young OL) are usually guys who make a lot of mistakes as they learn the game at the NFL level. Brax is a poster boy for this. Wright too for that matter.
