I have been of the same opinion, but am kind of changing my mind. I believe that it makes the most sense for them going with a new QB. If they go with Fields and they get him productive, everything is good. If they go with Fields and he does not get better, that would mean Flus and maybe Poles are gone. Waldron would have failed and his fate would be up in the air. Both with the Bears and reputationally. Having a hand in picking your own new QB that you can bring into your system from the get-go is a powerful driver. He will have at least two years before there is heat unless the QB just plain sucks and I don't think the probability of that is high. I just see a lot less risk with a new QB. Plus the fact that I do not see a path to another first pick next year, and I think they will take the path with less risk. I also see them picking up Fields 5th year option. You have to decide before you draft. It just makes sense. If you want to keep him, you have to do it. If you want to trade him, it makes him more valuable and easier to trade. Unless they plan on just releasing him, I don't see why they would not exercise the option.
I still think they are high on him, but I think self preservation is a pretty strong motivator and going for a new QB checks that box better.
I already said it after the hire, it really only makes sense for a wanted OC to come here if he is getting a shiny new toy. And you are wrong, picking up 5th option comes AFTER the draft. A week later, something like that.
Yeah.... I'm wrong on the dates, and yeah, I remember you saying that. I felt that it was 50-50 on which way they would go on QB, but yeah... I've kind of been leaning towards thinking they are going with a new QB. But hell..... ask me next week and I might flip back.

I think many of us have flipped back and forth over the last several weeks. Since we don't have a Sean Payton coming to resurrect Fields I am fairly confident we will draft a QB with first pick. I like Fields as he is representative of the Bears, he just seems to have an issue getting the ball out of his hands on time. Be it his slow dropback, recognizing the Defense or understanding open receiver in the NFL, or anticipating when to throw. Just seems best for Fields and the Bears to start anew.

That's kind of how I am thinking too, about a fresh start for Fields on a new team. It might end up being good for him and the Bears. My hope is that the Bears listen though to this new offensive coordinator and let him have input on who best fits his offense as his quarterback. Don't force Fields on him as QB1. But if for some reason he would want Fields then sure, keep him. My gut feeling is that Waldron will want a fresh start too though, with one of these guys in the draft.
The deadline is AFTER the draft in early May. Fields will very likely be on another team by then.
Yeah I really don't see Fields being traded until after the draft (possibly during) as that's when certain teams are going to be desperate if things don't fall their way and they still need a QB.
April
Either slightly before the draft or during is my guess. There's always more teams than there are QBs. Teams like Denver, Vegas, and Pitt are all picking our of the top-10 and all need QBs.
BTW, saw another analysis pod yesterday which again rated JF's trade value as a 2nd+. Maybe a 2nd and 4th? Could you maybe squeeze a 3rd from someone? I have yet to see any serious analyst rating him as worth a 1st. Be interesting to see if Poles can sucker someone. If not, gives you an idea of how he's viewed by the rest of the league. Not very high. Remember Montez Sweat cost a 2nd and he isn't a QB.

Over and over again I keep thinking that a 2nd round pick - this year in particular - could give the Bears a significant upgrade on the roster. In particular it could give us a young center for that OL. Even if the Bears go with a one-year vet at C, they could let the young guy get reps at G. Jenkins is often injured and Nate Davis just isn't that good even when he is healthy. Let the new guy get his feet wet there and then slide him over to C in 2025. Bears could go TE or WR with that 2nd round pick too... there will be very good players at both of those positions fall to the second round this year.

I'm still in the camp of trying to fix Fields as this gives us the most resources to upgrade the rest of the team. But I think we are going in the direction of trading him
