I don't think this hire tips what the Bears may do at QB one way or the other what so ever...but what it does say is that they need another receiver ASAP!!! Waldron ran a lot of 11 personnel, Bears need to seriously add talent and depth to the receiver room.
I have been of the same opinion, but am kind of changing my mind. I believe that it makes the most sense for them going with a new QB. If they go with Fields and they get him productive, everything is good. If they go with Fields and he does not get better, that would mean Flus and maybe Poles are gone. Waldron would have failed and his fate would be up in the air. Both with the Bears and reputationally. Having a hand in picking your own new QB that you can bring into your system from the get-go is a powerful driver. He will have at least two years before there is heat unless the QB just plain sucks and I don't think the probability of that is high. I just see a lot less risk with a new QB. Plus the fact that I do not see a path to another first pick next year, and I think they will take the path with less risk. I also see them picking up Fields 5th year option. You have to decide before you draft. It just makes sense. If you want to keep him, you have to do it. If you want to trade him, it makes him more valuable and easier to trade. Unless they plan on just releasing him, I don't see why they would not exercise the option.
I still think they are high on him, but I think self preservation is a pretty strong motivator and going for a new QB checks that box better.
Any coach who can turn a bust's career around and make him throw for 8,159 yards and 52 TDs in just two seasons is a good hire in my book.
I was listening to a podcast today that made an interesting comment about Waldron. They said Bill Belichick, Sean McVay and Pete Carroll liked this coach well enough to hire him. It wasn't meant as some big deal, but just a nugget to think about. It sounds like the offensive line woes really put the lower ceiling on the Seattle offense. I just hope Poles gives this guy an OL that can allow him to shine here.

No, you don't.
The deadline is AFTER the draft in early May. Fields will very likely be on another team by then.

I already said it after the hire, it really only makes sense for a wanted OC to come here if he is getting a shiny new toy. And you are wrong, picking up 5th option comes AFTER the draft. A week later, something like that.

Correct on both
I suppose its possible that Waldron (or anyone else interviewing) would really want to work with Fields. But not likely considering the alternative.
Ask yourself this: if you were considering a new project, would you want to clean up the last guy's mess or own your own project fresh? Pretty easy to see which most people would prefer and find more appealing.
The "keep Fields crowd" says it's all someone else's fault. The WRs, the C, the coaches, etc. So what then do you say to a potential new OC?
"Hey, Shane, we f****ed this up badly and need some guy to put his ass on the line to fix it. You got 1 season to get it done. Want the job?"

Yeah I really don't see Fields being traded until after the draft (possibly during) as that's when certain teams are going to be desperate if things don't fall their way and they still need a QB.

Ur right. Draft is end of April and 5th year deadline is beginning of May.
So, if you were wanting to trade for Fields, you wouldn't want him on a rookie deal before you traded for him? I would.

That or keep him even longer - injuries happen, another team might get really desperate.
