That’s the thing. No matter how much vetting they do, you can never 100% “make sure you have it right.” It is a calculated risk to stay with Fields and draft Harrison. But it’s also a calculated risk to draft a QB.
And just to be clear. I am not saying we should not draft a QB. Just pointing out that there is some level of risk with Caleb. He could be great here or he could be less than what fans think he will be here.
I understand. It all comes down to where you want to place your bets. Poles is going with the bet that has least chance to make him look like an idiot and get fired for missing on Stroud and Williams back-to-back. It would be a much harder call if all the “experts” were more divided in their QB rankings like last year.
This opportunity is not going to present itself again. I also hate to pass up the opportunity to build the team with all the picks we have if we don't pick a QB. It all keeps coming back to whether or not Fields can develop like we want. I don;t know how many times in how many threads it keeps coming back down to this. If he is not our guy, no hesitation to pull the trigger. If he is, we have a golden opportunity to take a HUGE step with the team.
That's pretty much it. The Bears gotta get this one right. There won't be a do over.

And in addition to that, I can see the other top few QBs in this draft are FAR from sure things... even more risk than Caleb. While I like guys like Nix, Maye and Daniels (and have said so before) they look soooooooooo risky. If I'm Poles and I do draft Caleb, or any of these QBs this year, then I am going to follow up and give the guy the best opportunity to succeed... go all-in on a rock solid coaching, play caller, another receiver and fix that OL to the max. You know - the same things they should have done with Fields but failed to do so.
I know there was a lot of blowback about the Bears drafting Caleb Williams. Are you still feeling that way or are you beginning to like the idea of drafting him?
I've been resigned to the belief they are drafting for the past few months, but I'm still sad about it and I still think the better team building move is to trade down and add weapons for Fields. I have also always said that Caleb is a TREMENDOUS talent and I get why they'd move on if they did. I just want to keep warning you all that Caleb does a lot of the things that people complain about with Fields...so some of you better buckle up for that.
Caleb played against 4 top 25 teams in 2023. His record was 0-4 in those games.
All are available in some form on YouTube. I would advise all die hard Caleb Williams fans to watch what they can and see if they feel the same. Start with his "highlights" in the game against ND.
To be clear about this, I am not saying that Williams will be a bust. He could easily end up being a great QB. But so could 3 or 4 other QBs in the 2024 draft.

And that is the very same thing we wrestle with every time we pick a QB. And so far, our record has not been good. There is debate (and rightly so) if it is the pick or the development. I think there is some of both, in varying degrees depending on the QB we have ruined.

If Warren & Poles are as clueless as our previous 4+ CEOs and GMs were, we have much bigger problems as opposed to a discussion on whether or not Caleb Williams is a productive out of the box and generational talent.
If they are pretty decent at what they do (and I dearly hope they are), then I will defer to their judgment on all things off-season.

I wouldn’t put Maye and Daniels in same category. I would rate Maye clearly #2 after Williams. Daniels is more like Fieids, so I would expect Poles to be more interested in Maye. That’s the backup if Williams attitude turns off Poles in the interview.
If anybody needs an eye-opener, check Nix vs. USC game where he threw for 400+ yards and 4TDs.

That’s why I am not opposed to keeping Fields and drafting Nix as his backup next year and even potential future QB1 if not Fields. We would get Harrison plus some insurance at QB position.
and by the time that new qb was in his 3rd year significantly less then JF if he's still here. Stop being you.
My position is that Fields is GONE if Bears are not Super Bowl ready by 2025.
Your QB will cost about $22 million by then. Fields will cost about $38 million more by then. That’s $16 million difference. Poles can manage that without breaking the bank.
Fields is likely gone regardless. He isn't a qb, he's an athlete but doesn't want to play QB the way it needs to be done in the NFL. Even if they keep him this year, he's not going to be here next year no matter the outcome; b/c the outcome won't be playoff success b/c of JF, sure to hell won't be SB. He's not even Dak Presscott good, he sure to hell will not have a better post season career then Dak.

You don’t know his ceiling on a better team with Harrison in 2024 or with some other team.
