I don't think Williams is the guy either, but to be fair, lots of people do. Would be interesting to hear if he thinks there is a guy that is head and shoulders above Fields in the draft.
That is just a subset of Hoge's full comments on Williams.
On YouTube, I was watching the full interview with Hoge and a couple of other people discussing Hoge's comments on Williams. I've posted one below. One of Hoge's comments really sticks out to me "If you can't play in a dirty pocket, you'll never function in our league". This is about 7:10 in the NBC Chicago video.

I am not a fanboy of Caleb Williams, but to be honest I don't agree with his assessment of him at all. I don't. In fact I think his description of Caleb's playing in a dirty pocket is not based in reality if you watch the film on him. Like ANY quarterback he will be less effective and accurate under great pressure. But the guy makes incredible passes a LOT of the times under pressure - even when there IS no pocket and he's running for his life. Yeah, some pretty dumb and inaccurate comments from this guy. Again, not saying Caleb is how we should go, but "fair is fair" when assessing his game. This dude is just doing a hit-job on him... and looks fairly ignorant in the process... that's my take anyway.

Im so glad you are giving new chance(s) to Williams and Maye, cos those 2 boys sure are good
I thought Hoge's comments pretty much summed up much of Williams' 2023 game against ND.
That was 1 game in a college career though. He has had a few bad games like EVERY quarterback has. I watched that ND game live. Yeah he had a bad game. It happens. QBs - all QBs - have some bad games. But I could take a few games by Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes and a lot of Aaron Rodgers games - and blow hot air about them being bad QBs too...
And, obviously, I would be an idiot to do that.
If you watch Caleb Williams' full body of college work - and, really, going back to high school (there's some out there that I've watched too) - the guy is not what is being described in that video. Like I said, I'm not a fanboy. I'm not pulling for the Bears to draft him, but hey, that was just a bunch of crap the guy was dishing out there in that video. I thought it was a VERY unfair representation of Caleb Williams. To the point I gotta wonder what his agenda is here, right?

I am trying to keep an open mind. Fields, Williams and Maye all have positives and also stuff that concern me, if I am honest about it. They all can do some exciting stuff too. My hope is that whomever the Bears choose to roll with, they go all-in to ensure they have what they need to shine here. It's going to take fixing a broken OL and adding a legit talent to the WR room, and not one of these "hope and prayer" wannabees, but a legit talent that defenses fear. We really need a rock-solid TE to compliment Kmet too (Waldron runs a lot of 12 and even 13 sets). I do believe Shane Waldron will be a huge upgrade over our past play callers here... and he is very good about getting the best out of his QB1. Love his offense too... but he needs talent to run it at a high level. Bears need to give him that talent.
"Nobody KNOWS anything" - drafting Caleb Williams would be a bold move for the Bears and NOT a sure thing.
This Brian Billick interview was a good dose of reality and common sense regarding the Bears quarterback situation. It's not pro-Field or pro-Williams or any other QB. He just lays it out there that this is a really tough call for the Bears no matter what they end up deciding. He said you start with the premise that nobody knows anything. He says no matter what you THINK you know, 50% of these guys bust. Period.
He wrote a book about it, "The Q Factor: The Elusive Search for Elite NFL Quarterbacks and Other Great Leaders" - everyone talks about "sure things" and talk about a guy being a "generational quarterback" if you draft him. Nobody knows anything. Period. He said it's a crap shoot.
And that's the bottom line here. I agree, it is a tough call for Chicago. They have to get this right, but it is not a sure thing no matter what the meatball fans & the talking heads in the podcasts spout. I think of all the stuff I've listened to or read on this upcoming decision - THIS - was the most accurate. Nobody knows anything, because in the end it is a crap shoot.
