Williams was understandably criticized for playing hero ball too often (leading to increased TTT) last season as he was often playing from behind and on a shit team.
Cmon, I watched USC this year. The Bears' offense was (far) worse than USC's talent and coaching - and it is not even close. LOL, did you watch them play this year? Seriously, did you watch any of their games? Williams had better everything than what the Bears had this year on O. And they played some pretty soft defenses in comparison to the bigboy conferences. I "get it" that you don't want Fields here. I think you will get your wish. And you could be right about Williams being better here on the Bears... could very well be the case. But I think you are going a bit overboard about "poor Caleb" at USC.
I don't know what games you were watching, but the reason Caleb is praised for having great pocket presence is because the pocket frequently broke down around him. While I don't agree he had a shit team, he didn't have the best supporting cast at times. This is very evident on tape.
In a lot ways Caleb's situation reminds me of Lamar Jackson's. The year after Lamar won the Heisman he didn't appear to have as good a year as the previous. This likely contributed to him falling so far in the draft (Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold were both drafted ahead of him, haha). But if you'd watched all his games you would have seen the team around him was much worse and he was having to do most of the lifting. This put him in positions where he had to play more desperate than he should have. In fact his stats weren't even all that different, but lousy play around him colored everyone's perception of him.

But that was Justin Fields' situation when he arrived at Chicago. I'll be honest. I could see Williams turn out to be Patrick Mahomes level, but just as easily I could see him being a "poor man's Justin Fields" here too. If we draft him I hope it is the former and not the latter case.

And we would have wasted a lot of draft capital to find that out. I'm sure glad I'm not making that decision, but they need to get it right, even with the apparent lack of meaningful data for Fields in a "good system". I guess that's why Warren and Poles make the big bucks.

+1,000 to that for sure. If Caleb is the guy then hey, I'm all for that. If Fields is the guy, hey, don't let him get out of the building to star for another team. Poles earns his big bucks on this one.

Any of these guys including whoever is the first pick can be great, ok, or schitty

HUH?
USC has maybe one other draftable player on O and their D and iOL was total crap. I couldn't disagree more with what you said.
Fields had 2 top-10 receiving targets. The "reasons I don't want Fields here" are that he is A) still a bottom-third QB after 3 years and B) he's indisputably the worst QB in our division. Those are two pretty good reasons to move on after 40 games.

USC was a low-quality college team last year outside of QB. Not even in the same league as the top SEC or Big-10 teams nor several in their own conference.
