Fields in turn was handicapped by Getsy's inability to adjust to pressure, to move the pocket and to scheme. Which in turn was handicapped by Fields hunting for chunks (which I'm convinced led him to hang on to the ball for just one more second to see if Moore/Mooney/someone would run clear downfield but then...)
We drafted an elite QB from Ohio State who was (as butkus3595 said) a "Big Game Hunter" who was lethal with the long ball. Lethal. Accurate, strong-armed, loved hitting the big chunk plays that pretty much define good NFL QB's. Then he comes to the Bears and he doesn't have the receivers or offensive line to do that game. But it is in his DNA. He is prototypical in that he has the ability to hit the big chunk plays, while still being able to kill an opponent with his run game as needed. Both. I love watching his play at OSU, and have watched every single snap he took there - facing the best-of-the-best defenses, and on the greatest stages of college sports. Dude balled. Dude balled as a passing QB. Lethal.
Then he comes here to Chicago...
... where there is no pocket to work from. No time to let big plays develop... especially when the center on that OL is letting defenders come INTO that pocket pretty much unblocked... there is no pocket to step up into. We see that. Game after game after game. So, he tries to escape and he holds on to the ball too long waiting for his receivers to get open... no question, he likes to see some separation before throwing the ball. When you don't trust your receivers (not named D.J. Moore) that is understandable... the stone-hand boys are frustrating for sure. Almost as frustrating as the Turnstile-boys (boys trying to block men).
You definitely touched on one of Fields' problems in this offense here in Chicago (if you can even call it an offense under Nagy/Getsy).
Fields is expecting one set of play calls and can't execute what Getsy wants because the DT is literally matching him step for step down his drop. He can't hit the checkdown because the RB is busy wiffing on the LB who came through the a-gap RIGHT NEXT TO THE DT. So Fields spins out and spins again and doesn't see Kmet/Moore breaking into space. Or maybe he does but he can't anticipate
Meanwhile Getsy sees the pressure and decides to throw a center screen over the blitzing LB and over the crashing DT, but any DC even Tucker knows that is what is coming, so its pick-sixed (is that a word?)
Hopefully, we can move past this with Wheldon. But only time will tell. Trestman when we was brought in was applauded as an outside the box hire, the OC that took Rich Gannon to an MVP award. And we all know how that worked out.
