Fields had a 117 passer rating in the first quarter when Getsy was using his opening scripted plays. That was the only thing Getsy did well.
Yeah. I noticed that too. It makes me think (even now) that Getsy is a capable play call scripter. A few times I thought the games started out pretty well. I have no idea how you can come up with a decent series of plays to start out a game but then have no idea how to keep it up for the rest of the game. I just kept thinking that the scripted plays were good but then when the other team adjusted to his plays, Getsy had no idea how to readjust. And he certainly didn't know how to call plays to close out a game. My point is that I think the dud may actually end up being a decent OC some day. He could at least come up with plays to string together when he had time (a week) to develop them. Definitely not ready for prime time though. I know people think he was hot garbage (and I definitely don't want him back) but he may still end up ok at some point.

oh, very possibly. And I am not going to expend a lot of energy defending him. I am just saying that it is possible he has the bones of being a good OC. And even if so, he still has a ways to go. Or like you say, that's all he is good at. Doesn't really matter to me any more. He is someone else's problem to figure out.
Y'know what, I was working my way toward this in my discussion with Rick.
I think (because I haven't tried verification) that whenever Fields flashed or had a substantial performance... it coincided with the same thing from Getsy. If Getsy called a good game, it showed on the field. It showed with Fields. If the game plan made JF1 comfortable, you saw him flash. Getsy was a rookie OC and he was far from ready. But I think he'll get there one day. I think his game planning, his stubbornness, and his ineptitude against defensive changes directly correlated to what Fields did on the field. Why?
Because of the sheer number of times I saw Fields swallowing frustration. And I didn't catch every game.
I think the OC change pays off big-time.
I think Poles is playing S&M with that No. 1 pick because that's what you do and he might have a motive.
Poles might use Fields' performance against him (hang on) so he'll be resigned... at a substantial savings.

yeah, I think it crossed a few of our minds. Anything is possible. I just figured that at the end of the day, when he knows what he has on the table as far as trade options, he is going to weigh everything (including what he has to pay Fields - at the end of the day, I figured he wouldn't make any offers until he saw what happened this year. Even if it cost him more) and make his decision. I don't think anything firm has been decided on Fields. They probably are leaning a certain way but the scales can change if the right opportunity presents itself.

It didn't seem to me they were all one read offenses. Gesty actually mixed them up sometimes in the scripted plays. We shall see what happens this year. We will know more this year.

But what about the crazy play calling in the 4th quarters? It was bizzaro stuff... jaw dropping stupid at times. And how about the critical (and stupid) penalties that killed drives in the 4th quarters? And the dropped passes, how about them? Fields owns some of it too. But it was clown show stuff in some of those 4th quarters that had zero to do with the quarterback, right?

They go together in the 4Q too. Getsy was as bad in 4Q as he was good in the first. Also, it’s very hard to play from behind in 4Q with this OL and Moore the only reliable WR. I still remember those long sure TD passes to Tonyan, Scott, Mooney, etc. dropped. There are 10 other people out there that you need to do the job, and when they are not doing it, you get a QB with a 53 rating.
