Caleb and Fields both have that "holding the ball" problem. Watch the film. Hopefully Shane Waldron can help Caleb in that area like he helped Geno. But don't think you're getting a guy in Caleb who doesn't do the same thing as Fields. I've watched film on Caleb until my eyeballs are about to drop out - he looks like Fields in some ways. He is going to need some good coaching. The raw talent is there, but he also has some rough areas to his game - like Fields. The one positive I do see in Caleb, where he looks significantly better than Fields is that he sure seems to process the game faster. I do believe Trubisky and Fields both had a hard time processing mentally on plays. Caleb seems to do so at an elite level. But the "holding the ball" thing is a problem with Caleb Williams too... there are times in those games where he has an open WR and he does a Justin Fields imitation and makes plays with his feet. The recent Kurt Warner film breakdown on Caleb was pretty objective about his faults (a bit brutal at times). Caleb needs work at the next level, but hopefully the Bears present coaching staff can help him develop.
I think (JMO) is what separates the elite QBs from the rest.
I'm convinced of that too. They talk about the "it" factor in elite QB's - that mental CPU is what "it" is. And you can't teach it or coach it. QB's either have it or they don't.
Or as Mark Twain loved to say. "There are three kinds of lies ... Lies, Damned List and Statistics".
Actually, the ability to properly identify, draft and helps a college QB develop into a start seems to be a relatively rare skill only found on those teams who repeatedly go deep in the playoffs. So to go back to the first quote, is this the actual causal relationship in all the arguments on this.
Or to put it more simply. Maybe what you really need is a team with intelligent ownership, skilled CEO types, competent GMs, player/personnel staffs, coaching staffs, etc. Then identifying and getting the critically needed skill players becomes more predictable.
But it is already predictable. It's always bad.
And this is why I keep coming back to ownership and management of the franchise. Unless ownership keeps trying to get the best possible CEO type as well as a solid GM in place and then just stays out of their business, except when asked. As well as have the financial wherewithal to keep writing the checks as needed. And as long as the management and the GM/player personnel/etc is up to the task we should be OK. I will be happy just to let them go about their work.
If the above is properly set up and humming along, we will be good, if not very good. If not, we're screwed.
I'm definitely saying were are at that happy state yet. Just that it is starting to look a lot better than is has for many years. But Warren & Poles need to have an awesome off-season this year and next year as well. Assuming that happens we should have many years of fun games to watch. And I am looking forward to several years of Packer fan lamentations.
I said a while ago that I didn't think there was an edge that was going to go in the top 10 based off of how the NCAA season was playing out at the time and the amount of QB's and WR's I thought would go in the top 10 plus Bowers. The performance Verse put on at the combine may change that...he's a guy I actually like a lot and thought he should have come out last year. Maybe he cracks it...but based on team needs around the end of the top 10, I think a couple of the offensive tackles go before him.
I read that Turner tested off the charts and he has the measurables/length that Poles seems to love.
What do you think of him as a top-15 pick?
I would not be surprised if it’s Turner or Verse. Looks like the offensive players will be picked over before #9. If they go heavy on linemen and Bowers in picks 5,6,7,8, there’s a finite chance that Nabers/Odunze slips to #9. Otherwise I want to trade down.
But if he is not playing well because of the scheme and protection, why wouldn't the stats show he is playing bad? The stats can be bad while not all of it his fault at the same time.
If the vast majority of their stats are poor then it's likely the player. Good players can generally put up decent stats even on bad teams.
This is such a weird position to take. How would it be possible to ever evaluate any QB if you don't look at the tape, and then explain away all their bad statistics as someone else's fault?
Not only any QB, its basically every player. And coach. And GM... its a team game, nobody can really be judged, ever, apparently

If not, I'll relocate to Africa and watch rugby.
Well, you can relocate to Africa, but also here to N Italy. We have some cool rugby clubs; my city has 2 rugby stadiums.

Africa has the wildlife we like. And the food fits our diet better. Plus Africa wins the Rugby World Cup.
