1st off, yes we all agree that last season was a teardown year and the roster had little talent especially in the 2nd half. But there is no way you can know that Mahomes or Caleb would/will "fail here". Stroud isn't failing in Houston and they were a horrid team last year, one of the few teams we actually beat. If you believe that any QB "would fail here" then you may as well quit being a fan. That's a defeatist mentality.
BTW, Fields has a top-10 WR and a top-10 TE RIGHT NOW. And he still can't seem to throw for 3000 yards which is a low bar to begin with.
I honestly don't know what Poles is gonna do. There's big risk either way. If he does keep Justin, that pretty much means you're running the same coaching staff back again. That sounds awful to me.
Personally, I'm out on Fields at this point as I think his ceiling as a passer is simply not high enough. His contract has only one more cheap year left. Poles isn't tied to Fields. Getsy needs to go (as we all agree) and no way you're gonna give Justin a 3rd OC in 4 seasons, right?
All those factors point to Poles moving on in my mind.
Except if you averaged out his stats this season for a full 17 games, he would throw for over 3k yards.
Mac Jones threw 3K in 14 games last year. Old Matt Ryan did it in 12 games. This is not the way to make the case. Hoge is right about Fields. The only real issue is the “good enough” question. We say “yes” and MP says “no.” I agree with him on the facts, but not his conclusion.
If he likes Fields and wants to work with him, I'm good with that. I can't imagine any rookie HC is gonna want to be tied to a QB in his final contract year.
Fields is not a very good passer right now. His stats and watching him tell you that. Like I said, his typical game is 16/29, 170 yards, 1 TD, 1 Turnover, and a crapfest 4th quarter. That doesn't (or shouldn't) impress anyone.
Does it have to be Harbaugh? Are you OK with keeping Fields, if they bring in some other coach?
I don't see that as a realistic possibility. A rookie HC isn't going to want to be tied to a QB in the final year of his contract. Don't force it. If you're gonna clean house, then clean house properly and get everyone on the same timeline. Don't mix and match new and old regimes like the Bears have done so many times before.
Everything with Fields right now is still about "projection", "potential", and ceiling. And that's pretty disappointing considering he's about to play his 40th game. I have been watching every game this year hoping to see him string together some elite performances and make this decision easy. It hasn't happened. I'm no fan of Getsy (in fact I hate the guy) but Justin does have decent RBs, a top-10 WR, and a top-10 TE this season.
Why can't he throw for 3500 yards? Cousins has thrown for 4000+ without breaking a sweat for years now.

3000 yards over a 17 game season is kind of a bare minimum thing. That's well under 200 ypg on average. In the modern pass-happy NFL, that's nothing special at all.

Understatement. You'd need a great defense to win a Super Bowl with 3,000 yards in the current NFL environment. That should just be a concession point, not something to fight to the death in the dirt over.
Have you seen the video where Corey Wooten says he wants to draft Harrison and Newton? He makes the same argument or keeping Fields as I do.

That would be an incredible upgrade for the 2024 team. Obviously we have a number of additional draft picks and cap $$$ available to upgrade a lot of positions also, in addition to adding MHJ & Newton. This is the best path forward. Don't blow everything up. Rather, fix what is broken and be strategic here. David, I do believe the team can put the "icing on the cake" in 2025 and be super bowl ready. If they don't tear it down (like "surgery with an ax" thing). MHJ and Newton would be FANTASTIC help to this team. And roll with Fields.

Sure…if you ignore the other the other ways he creates offense.

There's no question that keeping Fields makes things way easier in the short run. Heck, every single one of us wants JF to be the guy.
Today's game was a major step forward. Probably Fields' best performance of his career so far. Top-3 at least. As I said in the chat during the game, he would have had 4 TDs and over 300 yards passing if Tyler Scott just made plays he should have made.
I wanna see him do it again next week on the road vs Green Bay and if he does, he's for sure gonna be back. If the Rappoport report about Flus is true, he is probably already back as I can't see them keeping Flus and changing QBs.
BTW, Jordan Love already has 3600 yards passing this year and he has a game-and-a-half still to go in the season. This is Jordan freakin' Love we are talking about here. So there's zero reason for Fields to not be THROWING for 3500 minimum next season. I'm tired of hearing excuses.
PS: No one has yet explained to me how we are replacing Getsy. How is that gonna work? Who the hell does Flus have pull with to hire? Or are we keeping him despite him and Fields being a mismatch?

If Poles drafts Harrison, offensive coordinator for the Bears would be a dream job for somebody.

While we were all joking about Jordan Love (finally) ending the GB quarterback legacy, he was getting better and better. He is a legit good QB now. Dude has legit talent. He looks every bit as good as Aaron Rodgers did in his 1st starting season. Love will end up with pretty much the same passing yards and completion percentage, passer rating as Rodgers did in his first year of starting for the Packers. He is a legit ascending talent now.
