We've beaten the dead horse about the negatives... and there are a number of them. But this morning I kept thinking about the fact that the team DOES have some good rebuild resources to tap into for 2024 and beyond. Maybe this thread can be one where we can talk about a few of these positive things.
My first thought is that we have 2 very very high first round draft picks coming up. That is extremely rare. The last time the Chicago Bears had a situation like this was in 1965, and 58 years ago - and the Bears drafted 2 Hall of Fame players with those 2 first round picks (Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers). I am beyond excited to think about getting two HUGE pieces for the rebuild. Huge upgrades at two positions. And yes, we could even get a Hall of Fame talent in this upcoming draft - someone as exciting as Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers. LOL, but hopefully not a LB or RB - as the NFL has changed immensely since back then.
We do have some exciting young guys on this team that I already like. And I include DJ Moore in that group due to the fact he is really not old at all. His best seasons should be ahead for him and us.
I am stunned, in a good way, by how quickly this defense has turned around. I never in my wildest dreams figured the defense would improve this much, this quickly... and it will get better and better because this is just the first year of the rebuild. In 2024 and beyond we will see improvement. But for now, the floor for this unit is pretty darned good for this initial year of the rebuild. It's not just Sweat, but a number of very solid pieces on that unit. And young ascending guys too.
The team is very young and we SHOULD see a lot of players ascend in talent now. This is just the beginning for so many new/young players. We had 30 new players on this year's team. 30. That number just blows me away to consider. Players get better as they have more time building chemistry and learn their craft, honing skills at the NFL level (for the youngsters we have everywhere ya look now). I especially like our two tackles on offense who are going to continue to improve. Don't judge them for where they are at now, but understand the high ceiling they have. Youngsters who will ascend - a lot - over the next year or so. These are guys who (both) will be an incredible asset for years to come. Filling in the interior OL guys is a piece of cake compared with getting bookend tackles who can ball out.
Justin Fields. Whether we keep him or trade him, he has value. Yesterday on Hoge & Jahns, a guest with front office experience was saying that a realistic value in a trade (at the very least) is a 2nd and 3rd round pick... both. So, even if we trade Fields, think of having a couple more high round picks to go with the two 1st round picks we already have. That is significant when you consider the Bears will draft high in every single round of theh 2024 draft. It isn't just about the 1st round here. Of course our 2nd round pick is already on the roster - Sweat. For a 2nd round investment that guy is pure gold.
These are just a few initial thoughts to start this thread. Jump in with other positive thoughts. Negative thoughts are fine, but let's put them in the other threads. This one is the "feel good" thread... and there ARE some good things to build upon in 2024.
