I think Poles quietly regrets not taking CJ Stroud now (who wouldn't?) even though it was understandable at the time to give Fields year 3 to "break out". The breakout never happened. My guess is that he's not gonna pass on a QB this April again.

How that works out is anyone's guess. If he drafts a QB and that guy flops, Poles will be fired and we will rebooting the whole front office once again.

In retrospect, there were two things Poles could have done that would be better than what he did. I agree Panthers are idiots for trading McCaffrey and Moore, and then trading draft picks for Young, expecting him to pull a rabbit out of an empty hat.

If Fields plays well these last 3 games, I still think he may stay. Poles will probably wait til just before the start of free agency to trade. The team that trades for him will want to bring in pieces in FA to enable Fields to perform best.

I suppose if you have the #1 pick and you know for sure you are gonna use it on a QB, then it doesn't matter.

Rumor is Panthers brass wanted Stroud and their dysfunctional owner (Tepper) intervened and forced Young as the pick.

Like I said, that's why teams often have deals-in-principle worked out quietly in advance and yeah if Bears have #1 pick and know who they are taking then the timing is less critical.

BTW, with Saints losing last night, Carolina would have to win 2 of their last 3 for us to NOT have the #1 pick.

I'm just hoping the Bears make the best choices this off-season. The draft picks are fantastic - if and only if - you know what to do with them. I keep thinking of all of those drafts that the Lions had the high picks and basically did zero with those teams back then. Lots of coaching/GM turnover too.
