I agree. By tanking in 2022, he made himself bulletproof through 2024 on the grounds that he deserves time for his “haul” of draft picks and free agents acquired with his $100 million to play out (or not). Now he can trade Fields (not his “guy” so can’t blame him for the Fields draft) and draft a new QB. That move effectively resets the clock, because he deserves a couple more additional years to know whether his rookie QB will develop into a legit QB1. That takes us out to at least 2026 before he can be fired even if Bears are 3rd or 4th in the division in 2024 and 2025. It completely obviates my “Super Bowl ready by 2025” benchmark for judging Poles performance.
Poles also pulled off the biggest trade heist in the last decade. You seem to forget that. The Sweat trade is also looking like a huge win.
He also didn't draft Fields. So if they move on, which appears more and more likely, he's gonna get his opportunity to pick his QB.
The biggest disappointments of this season to me are A) Fields and B) Getsy. Without spiraling again into another chicken-or-egg discussion, the offense and Fields in particular has NOT taken that big leap forward we all hoped. The offense still sucks.

So you agree that tanking in 2022 plus drafting a QB in 2024 assures job security to Poles through at least 2026 no matter if we finish 3rd or 4th in the North in 2024 and 2025.
He has to be judged by the W-L record he achieves with his players and coaches he hires. Four years worth of mediocrity or worse would be a pretty damn low bar for Poles to leap IMHO.

Yeah I know but he's only been here 2 years and the 1st was a teardown. Barring a disaster, I think he has several years worth of leash left.
Most GMs get 2 HC picks and at least 1 QB pick (if needed). He whiffed on Flus--technically Getsy--I completely agree. If he had hired the Dolphins guy instead we would probably be 9-5 right now instead of 5-9 and Fields would be looking at a big contract extension.
I hope he has the courage to admit an honest mistake and clean house on the coaching front. And if he does, I can't see how Fields stays unless Poles lands Harbaugh and Harbaugh wants him. I can't see a new rookie HC wanting to tie his future to a QB in the final year of his rookie contract.

I still keep thinking that we may see everyone back here in 2024 except for Luke Getsy. Not saying it will happen but that we don't really know what this new CEO is going to do. The fan base will be crazy angry about it. But I would not be surprised.
Getting totally off topic here... but I was listening to Hoge & Jahns today and the guy they had on there was NOT a fan of Maye. Said he was not on the same tier as Caleb Williams. And it sounded like neither may be as good as the guy we already have - if Fields was in a system that was built to his strengths with an offensive coordinator or head coach who understood how to build an offense that was geared to his strengths. He specifically mentioned the Eagles OC if he gets the HC gig in say, Atlanta, could team up with Fields and absolutely ball with that offense. But here, the Bears seemed to not really want a "Fields type" of QB1. They never really tried to fit the offense to the strengths of the players. The old "square peg in the round hole" thing we've seen here in Chicago... the franchise is so messed up and has been for decades now. I keep hoping that Warren can be the guy who understands how to fix it all.
They had former GM Randy Mueller on their show a couple days ago. He would draft Williams. Poles will probably wait through combine to see if he is “blown away” by Williams or Maye. He has to convince himself that one of them is clearly better than Fields. I don’t think Fields performance this season was either good enough or bad enough for Poles to change his own personal standard he announced pre-draft last year.

Sadly, I agree about the length of the leash he has purchased for himself.
I can only hope that he picks better coaches and players going forward. So far, he has a few hits and a shitload of strikeouts and TBD draftees to his credit.

You keeping asking what will get Poles fired.
This QB decision coming up is a career-defining move. No matter which direction he goes, he's gonna get roasted for it. If he keeps Fields he gonna catch hell for not resetting the contract clock and drafting the "higher ceiling player". If he dumps Fields, he's gonna be criticized for failing the best prospect we have had in a long time.
Not to mention how that decision works out longer term. If he drafts Caleb and he busts or passes on him and he turns into another Mahomes, oh boy....
I'd say Poles has maybe 1 chance in 5 of surviving the upcoming choice long term. He's eff'd either way.

Shitload of strikeouts !? WTF
You can start with the WR position. The list is as long as your arm.

+1 I know. I think he needs to shut out the noise and do what he truly believes is best here. The fans will be fans and will hyper-criticize everything he does anyway. Don't try to please them by doing what they want... instead do what you think is right. He knew that building the Bears according to his plan was not a quick-fix fan pleaser. He is doing this the hard way, but it could be that in the long term we will look back on it all and realize he was right about a lot of things we though was wrong. Yes, he has made some mistakes. That shouldn't shock anyone. Let's see how it all looks as the 2nd year of the rebuild unfolds. 2024 could be a pivotal year where the team turns around and Poles looks like a young GM genius.
And it is not just about Fields vs Caleb here. The goal is to build the best team. So, as important as that decision is (it's huge, no question of that) but there are considerations beyond just that move. I keep hearing the "experts" on these talk shows and podcasts, saying that the "fit" matters in these situations - the supporting cast is critical to success no matter who you bring in at QB1. Supporting talent matters. Lack of it will make any QB1 a failure. I do keep thinking that keeping Fields and drafting Marvin Harrison Jr, and elite DL guy - and an elite C... along with the moves possible with the other high draft picks we'll have in each remaining round (and $$$ for FA's) - gives our QB1 incredible talent to work with. Talent like we have never seen before in Chicago on the offense. Drafting Caleb is not only a risk to some extent, it also means no MHJ is happening. And it's a domino effect - and not a good one - for the remaining offense talent we get. But yeah, it's time for Poles to pull up his big boy pants and make the best decisions here when the season ends.
