How to Save Justin Fields and the Bears Makes a Lot of Sense

There are options but no easy options.  The Eberflus hire was yet another setback for the organization, but we can't undo the damage already done.  Getsy has to go.  Fields' ceiling has probably been diminished as a result of the collateral damage of Nagy/Getsy and coming to a roster that wasn't ready to support a rookie QB.  I think Chicago had its franchise QB and he could have been special here - but that ship has probably sailed and he will end up a diminished talent in the NFL now.  Great athlete and running QB, but his mental gears are probably stunted by the experience here.  JMO.  Eberflus has a decent defense going now... at least it looks that way against weaker teams.  I think we need to move on from him.  He should not have been hired to begin with. 

I'm leaning towards keeping Poles and letting him hire his own coach and then have him work with the new offensive head coach & OC to draft the QB that fits their scheme... or maybe you sign our "Alex Smith equivalent temp QB" and fix the roster - and then bring in a rookie QB another year.  We don't have to have the worst team in the NFL (high draft pick) to land a solid QB.  There are a number of examples where teams brought in a great QB without having the top pick of the draft - KC is just one of a number of examples.  Heck, Green Bay has done this multiple times with Hall of Fame level QBs.  I'm not a Caleb Williams fan anyway, FWIW.

 I'm not saying this all is a "sure thing" that will fix the Bears.  But it may be the best way forward in a very bad situation.  A new coach means that not all of our players will fit well with the new schemes brought in.  It's a reset to some extent.  Starting over.  Again.  We just gotta hope that the Bears can get the QB draft right and get the key player pieces right on offense for the new kid - and also - get the coaching hire right this time (not only the HC but the coordinators).  I'm not sure the Bears are capable of doing that right, but what are the options?  We don't have any great options here.  It's picking the lessor evil.  Flush all 3.  I hate that, but I think it's just playing the hand we were dealt... a crappy hand.    

"Super Bowl ready" to me means you have your long-term answer at QB.  As much as I hate Getsy, I can't say that Fields is that guy right now.  

This was supposed to be the year where we figured that out.  Figured out JF's potential ceiling.  We still haven't done that yet because the coaching is so underwhelming that a proper evaluation is muddied.  

It's not muddied with Zach Wilson for instance. 

I think you laid it out well and I think that the "flush all 3" approach is where this is heading.  Not in stone yet but getting there soon.

BTW, the advantage of drafting a QB in 2024 is that you won't have to trade up and give away future picks to get him.  If you go 9-8 for instance and slip into the 7th WC spot, you're drafting at #20 or so and have to trade FRPs to move up.

As you said, it's impossible to be sure about this.  It's a calculated risk no matter what direction the Bears go.
