With all these Sweat and JJ news, heres a thread we can talk about various extensions that await us this season/off season. Most important extensions are aforementioned Sweat and JJ, but we need to throw in Fields 5th option, as well as our other FAs, like Mooney.
Seems to me that JJ thinks he is a top NFL CB (he said it yesterday), and im sure he is looking for 20+ per year. JJ is great, buy with his injury history, he IS NOT a top NFL CB.
In our situation, bottom of the league, can we really afford to tie over 40mils on JJ and Sweat? We do have a lot of space, but we also need to sign a LOT of guys. Are we really in a situation to sign these guys on such hefty contracts, with so many holes all around? Prepaying is a fast lane to hell, alhough we are already there. Discuss 🙂
JJ is on record saying he isn't trying to break record money. Wouldn't be surprised the Bears gave him a super low ball offer like 15 million.
Here is the thing. What else are we going to spend that money on? We missed out on a few good FA's like Orlando that would of been a huge difference maker for us. You got to pay for talent at the end of the day.
JJ saying he would take offense if Sweat got an extension before him.
Man, those guys really think about wrong stuff. I dont get that mindframe, at all. Like peacocks.
Why shouldn't he? He's home grown talent that deserves his contract.
Thats not the question. Are u following all this? We tried to extend him, he didnt take it and now hes gonna get offended like some granma cos hes not gonna get extended first!? GTFO with that kindergarten shit. Are these guys grownups or what?
Thats like Bears organization gets offended cos he didnt take our possible lowball, cos 'we drafted JJ and he should be forever and ever be grateful to us!'

I know. But I sometimes think that attitude is also what makes them great. They have to believe that first - and especially for a cornerback. The good ones are a special breed I think. They have a swagger (good QBs need that attribute too).

I am hoping both guys get extended. At some point, if you don't want to continue having a crap team, you do have to invest in key positions. Edge and CB are two of those key positions. Don't do some crazy overpaying, but at the same time you have to realize there IS a cost to doing business here with these key positions. You don't do this with positions like RB. But edge and CB, you need to open up and pay good money for good players - and especially in JJ's case, a guy you drafted. If a team doesn't have at least a few of these success stories then hey, you're failing, right?
Yesterday at 9:35 AM, I got a call from a very well-known and accurate NFL "Insider." The first thing he said to me was, "Do you know what Jaylon Johnson is looking for?" I told him no, but I assumed it was a very high figure. He said the word around the League is that he is looking for a contract similar to what the Cowboys' Travon Diggs received this summer.
