On the Score they were talking about how the Bears have given Sweat a lot of power to get overpaid now. Sweat is only under contract for 9 more games, unless the Bears are willing to deal with this as just a 9-game signing and/or franchise tag to prolong it temporarily. They were saying it would have made better sense if the Bears had a deal in place here for a long term contract. Without that leverage, Sweat gains a LOT of leverage over the Bears now. Otherwise that (very high) 2nd round pick could have brought in a guy on a rookie contract deal.
What? No way. The winning culture and great coaching the Bears have developed over the past two years makes this team a desireable destination for any player. He will take what we offer with no complaints.
No he doesn't. Bears have the FT and its either Sweat or JJ getting it...
If I was Sweat. I'm demanding as much money as possible. Only the Bears lose in this deal from either losing Sweat or JJ. Or overpaying for one of them which Poles does not do.
I'm reluctant to hot-take this until we see it play out more but yeah I'm gonna be all-aboard the Fire Poles Train if he screws up the Sweat and JJ contract situations.
You have a chance to nail down young talent at all three levels of the defense (with Edmunds) so you better not eff this up.
You traded a 2nd round pick for Sweat so you have to believe in him enough to pay him. SO JUST FREAKIN PAY HIM. Don't nickel and dime this crap.
And get a deal done with Jaylon. Figure it out and get it done. He's on record saying he's not trying to reset the market and knows he isn't gonna command Treyvon Diggs money. So the damn number is roughly $16-19m AAV. It's obvious that's what he's gonna get if he hits FA. There's no mystery here, dude. Just get it done.
If Poles screws this up, then yeah I'm on board with sending him packing along with Flutsy.

Do you pay him 20+ million a year if he demands it? Sweat has full control over how much he gets now. Poles has to pay him or lose his job. FT is 20 million for pass rusher.

Are you talking about Sweat? If the FT number is $20m, then yeah you're paying him that, maybe a bit more. That's a decision you made when you traded for him. He's not a 1/2 season rental for a playoff run. You traded for him for the FUTURE. Pay the man. He's gonna get FT money MINIMUM if he hits FA in March and you knew that before you made the trade.
Not rocket science here. If you believed in him enough to trade for him, then lock him down.
Similar thing with JJ. His value is pretty well set. Just get it done.
I have this scary image in my mind that Poles is surrounded by a bunch of pencil-neck nerds crunching moneyball numbers on spreadsheets. Dude, building a team of young(er) talented players matters. Not pissing off the locker room matters. Putting in a foundation matters.
Those things matter way more than saving a million here or there trying to "stick to your number". Last year was a teardown, I get it. Now you gotta stop letting young talent walk out the door or this rebuild will take 7 years and you be fired long before then. Wake the eff up.
PS: I'm still pissed about passing on Orlando Brown, a 26 yo all-pro LT for $16m AAV last spring. Instead you signed a guard who's missed most of the season. Brilliant move, cheapass.

Poles is working with Sweat's agent and a deal looks like it's going to get done according to Poles. I stickied the Sweat press conference in it's own thread. Dude is impressive. I like him a lot. I am climbing back off the ledge now after listening to him LINK

Thanks, JABF. That's good to hear. Even the Bears can't be stupid enough to NOT sign him.

I gotta admit I was pretty worried. But then I couldn't believe any GM would be that crazy to not have some kind of an overview of a long term contract before moving on this. Not even the Bears are that crazy. But gotta admit I was on the ledge for awhile today :-)

20 million dollars for a guy who has never hit 10+ sacks in a season? That's top 5 money. Sorry but Sweat is nowhere close to that value. We could of waited to the offseason to overspend on that. The point was to trade him and get a bit below market value for giving up a high second rounder. Poles screwed up and never even talked about his contract before hand. 27 isn't youngsters. That's prime players.
Sweat holds all the cards now. He can hold out and get 20 million from FT or demand top 5 money for the next few years. If Poles wants to keep his job. He's going to have to go with his demands.
This is the same guy who didn't even go after Orlando Brown who was an all-pro LT. The NFL is a passer first league and we rather overspend on a B+ Pass rusher than an A+ LT...

Well, sorry but reputable sources disagree with you. He's been very durable and is on pace for a career year.
OTC values him at 18. So midpoint there is in the low 20s. If the FT cost is 20 like you said, he's not gonna sign for 15 cuz he knows the Bears have to pay him 20 minimum just to keep him one year.
Sweat is a very good player who's versatile to play 4-3 or 3-4, is rock solid vs the run, and is on pace for double digit sacks. I have zero problem with the trade or spending good money on a good player at a high impact position of need. I just wish I had more confidence in Ryan Poles to get the thing over the finish line with a multi-year contract.
Bears have a ridiculous amount of cap space and no QB to pay. This is a good move IF he locks down JJ and Sweat.

Yeah, I'm off of the ledge this morning and thinking Poles will get this done and the team sure needs this guy. We are a better team with Sweat here.
