I looked up the performance of rookies Paris Johnson and Broderick Jones. They were the other top draft candidates. Neither of them is off to a spectacular start.
Offensive linemen and TE's seem to take awhile to transition (even more than most other positions). I think it is especially true for tackles. The difference between college play and the NFL game for these guys is so much different, tougher. The defenses, and in particular the edge rushers are crazy-good... so much more skilled than college guys. These are pros who have had years to hone their skills as professionals. The OL play requires a mix of very special skills (physical and mental). It is basically 320 pound men engaging in a type of martial arts - incredible speed, quickness and power (there is a reason why OL drop like flies to injuries at the NFL level... it is explosive hand-to-hand combat). These are not just 320 pound fat boys at the NFL level. These men are world-class athletes in every sense. OL score higher than any other position group on the Wonderlic... at the NFL level these guys have to be football-brilliant guys. It's just a crazy tough job at the NFL level... at least I believe that. And it's why I love to watch that position play more than any other. I often (for years now) have re-watched the games just to focus on the OL play. I love to watch the big guys work. The war in the trenches is fascinating to me. I've always enjoyed it... at any level (I just got home from watching our high school team play tonight... LOL, I'm still cold... it's really cold and windy here tonight). But I loved watching the linemen tonight. Good stuff.
EDIT: Our HS team is unbeaten so far. They are fun to watch. Tonight was homecoming night and they won 33-0. Mrs JABF was with me. It brought back memories, because 50 years ago she was homecoming queen at this school. At supper tonight, before the game, she had the old high school yearbook out and we were looking at the old pictures together. I'm older than her though. I tell her she's the "young chick" still :-)
