A good coach can make a lot of GM's mistakes look good or forgettable. Case in point San Fran. Any other GM that gives up everything that they did for Lance is likely fired because that team will stink. But Shanny is so damn good he can make it work with Purdy.
That's a good point too. The Bears are the polar opposite situation now. So much inexperience everywhere you look. We have a first time GM, HC, both coordinators were new - and we had 30 new players on the roster this season. San Francisco not only has Shanny but they have incredible talent everywhere. I just keep thinking how we get from where we are to where a team like SF is (not just SF but the upper tier teams in the NFL).
The 49ers and Eagles traded draft picks for established stars McCaffrey and AJ Brown. They were both great today. That’s contrary to Poles “build through the draft.” Claypool notwithstanding. Unfortunately, he’s not very good at drafting. Maybe your hope that he can learn from his mistakes will happen in 2024. The Lions have also beaten him in both the draft and free agency. Compare their rookies to Poles rookies. Or the Seahawks. Or Jags. There are reasons why these teams have significantly improved since 2021.

eagles and 49rs didn't just trade to get good, they were already setup b/c of how they drafted to get good and traded to get over the top. So contrary to your contrary, it's a poor take.

The Jags should be a dynasty by now seeing how they have had a top 10 first round pick EVERY year since 2008 not including last year. Of those picks they have had 8 top 5 picks and 3 years they had multiple 1st round picks sooooooo.....
They have NOT been very good at building through draft.

Sounds like the Lions from the early aught's. A Bad GM cannot fix anything via FA or the draft. Doesn't change that the draft is still the best way to do it b/c it allows you to sign minimal FA's keeping the cap for the future freed up.

It seems too early to say anything definitive about Poles' draft classes. His 2nd season here is only 5 games in. We have always been told that it really takes about 3 years to properly evaluate a draft class. He hasn't even been here that long yet.

Well, it hasn’t taken years for the Lions draft picks to produce, has it?
These guys he drafted last year are now in year #2. Is something miraculous going to happen year #3? I’ll believe it when I see it.
Ask yourself again, “How did the LIONS, Jags, Seahawks, improve so much since 2021 and the Bears have not? Coaching is surely part of it, but lack of talent is the largest problem, and that’s mostly on Poles.

It took them the better part of 50 years.
Wrong time-frame. I am talking about 2021 season to 2023 season.
