If Poles had traded for Ridley while he was suspended this board would have melted down. Period. End of discussion.
Everyone except me. So far, it’s working well for the Jags, and I said at the time that I would have liked Poles to make the trade. I wanted him, or Hopkins, or Cooks, but I guess Poles figured he didn’t need any more receivers. Claypool is already gone, and Mooney has 8 receptions.
No...you apparently said it in December...after he was ALREADY traded.

Ridley is earning $11 mill this season...what level of play would you say he needs to hit in order to make it worth it to extend him, and at what price tag? Also, I just saw that the 4th rounder they gave up for the 2024 draft becomes a 3rd rounder if Ridley plays 60% of the snaps, and a 2nd if he signs an extension. So he was basically traded for a 2023 5th and at minimum if he stays healthy a 2024 3rd, and a 2nd rounder if he signs an extension. If he doesn't sign the extension you gave up a 2023 5th and a 2024 3rd for 1 season of play...you still want to say you wouldn't get on Poles for that?
Most of the WR2 level guys are getting $10-11M, so if he has 70+ receptions and 1,000+ yards, would give him another $11M next year on a 3yr. Contract with a lot of incentive money in year 2-3 without a lot guaranteed. If he has a very good season in 2023, other teams will be interested in him for 2024. What’s your answer to your question? I’m interested.
I will note that the offensive coordinator has total control over whether he gets 60%+ of snaps. If he doesn’t continue to play well and/or Jags fall out of playoff contention, they might screw around to shade him under 60%.
No...most WR 2's that aren't on rookie deals are not making $10 - $11 mill. His teammate, Christian Kirk is making $18 mill a year. Tyler Lockett is making $17.25 mill a year. Hell...Hunter Renfrow is making $16 mill a year! So I'm thinking if he hits the numbers you listed it's gonna cost you a lot more than $10 to $11 mill a year heavily incentive based. And if, like you said, other teams are interested, you're going to lose him with that offer...and all you got was one year for a 5th and a 3rd.
Lastly...even if they ran 12 personnel...Ridley is still out there. They'd have to bench him to not get to 60% snaps...which wouldn't make sense for a team trying to make the playoffs. It really wouldn't be possible without a total benching coming some time soon.
Did I say it was a dumb trade, or did I say I wish Poles made the trade? It was the latter: December 19, 2022. Do I need to copy it and paste it here?
Yes...and either way...you said it with hindsight, as the Bears offense was already far gone and the need for immediate help for Fields was gone. Easy statement for you to make at that time.

Disagree on all your points. I am watching ND/USC game. More coming after the game.
I am actually more interested in your own answer to the question about what it would take to give Ridley extension, and what contract to offer, if extended.
Edit: I'm back...

Dec 19, 2022 at 1:05pm davidl said: I just read that Calvin Ridley wants out of Atlanta and “several teams” are making trade offers. I hope Poles is one of them. At this point, I would take a chance on him. Unlike all Poles' other lost dogs he has brought in, at least Ridley has proven that he can play at a high level in NFL. I expect it would not be a hugely expensive contract.
Assuming the reports are correct that we wants out of Atlanta, he would have a chance to be WR1 on a team with a rising star quarterback that is poised to get much stronger next year. Poles should be able to sell that concept to him or Hopkins if the opportunity arises.
I just found the above note from me on Dec. 17, 2022. Clearly, I was confused about the state of events at that point and thought that the trade was possible, Jags had not already made the trade, and that the trade deadline had passed. So, you can accuse me of gross ignorance of the situation, but I obviously believed at the time that Poles could make the trade. QED.
Now, for your other point. The trade was obviously looking forward to the 2023 roster, and thought he would be a good risk/reward option. So did the Jags. Poles thought he was all set at WR, but Mooney and Claypool did very little to earn that confidence in 2022. Note I was also asking (again) for Hopkins. I also wanted Cooks or Evans, if possible. IOW, I wanted to add a quality veteran WR.

It was my first time watching the great "generational talent" QB, Caleb Williams. Under pressure he winged 3 interceptions by halftime (fumbled before the half too but got the ball back). He reminded me of Rex Grossman tossing ints and just looking panicked. LOL, about his dad wanting a team to sign over a percentage of franchise ownership to sign this guy. Good luck with that.

That level of pressure will rattle any QB. Apparently, butkus took his shot and went to bed. He's on Eastern time.

Watching Caleb Williams reminded me of so many "sure thing" QBs who busted at the NFL level in spite of the immense hype-train stuff. Remember the hype over JaMarcus Russell? I do. I've watched over 60 years of "sure thing" guys fail at the NFL level. There ARE no sure things in the NFL. The way this works is that the sports media hypes these guys and the meatball fans hungry for a QB buy into the hype train.
Just one of these guys was JaMarcus Russell. Everyone and their brother called him a generational talent too. Here's just a few of the hype train comments in the media back then:
"I can't remember being in such awe of a quarterback in my decade of attending combines and pro days. Russell's passing session was the most impressive of all the pro days I've been to. His footwork for such a big quarterback was surprising. He was nimble in his dropbacks, rolling out and throwing on the run. The ball just explodes out of his hands." -- ESPN
"... elite top five quarterbacks in this league... Look out because the skill level that he has is certainly John Elway-like."
"The workout Russell had was Star Wars. It was unbelievable."
"He's like a video game. There's not a throw he can't make and there's some he can make I'm not sure anyone else can make."
"From a physical skill set perspective, I've never seen a college quarterback with more ability than Russell. You put the tape on and it's frightening."
That's a bit unfair, by all accounts Russel's problem wasn't talent, it was being given so much money he figured out he didn't have to actually worry about playing. He basically jerked around w/his big paychecks and waited to be cut.
