So we all pretty much all know each other here. The guys that know me know that I really am not a Cutler basher, nor am I a Cutler lover. I just look at performance and base my merit on that.
So here we go with another season of potential offensive incompetence. And we have had some proven OCs. No matter what you think of Martz or Trestman (only as an OC), they knew what they were doing as far as offensive football (yeah, I know what I did there).
The constant has been Cutler. Now, I am pretty analytical so while on the other board, people would be popping up saying I'm blaming everything on Cutler --- hopefully you guys know enough to understand that I am not.
It is a very complex dynamic. We have had huge turnover in offensive coordinators and have had some truly horrible ones. We have had some really crappy players, but on the other hand, we have had some really good ones. Through think and thin, with some exceptions last year and one year with Trestman, our offense has continuously underperformed. They have underperformed even when we had crappy players. We still managed to play worse than them.
As I say, the only constant is Cutler and I keep coming back and wondering about that. I mean, he sacrifices himself, he is a tough SOB, he can make all the throws, yet it never really clicks. Now it is a whole team effort and the players sucked big last week from what I can tell, but do we really have an issue with a guy that does not bring out the most in the players around him? I mean we can say they are all professionals and should not need motivation all we want, but it is an emotional sport and having a guy that will rally the troops is important. The players say they are behind him. I'm not sure I believe it as much as I used to. I don't know... that x-factor seems to be missing.
Am I seeing or feeling stuff that is not there? Am I the only one uneasy?

Time will tell.. I think the Bears will start slow..
Cutler bears his share of the blame when the offense sucks but last nights stupefying offensive performance can't be solely heaped on his back. Jeffery couldn't catch anything and didn't seem to care that he couldn't. White's running wrong routes. The middle of our offensive line couldn't leverage the line consistently and they couldn't create running lanes for Carey, Rodgers or Langford.
No, yesterday wasn't a Cutler fail, it was poor offensive showing. It's the preseason and this performance is a bad sign - it's only a sign. Come week 1 if they look horrible, there will be plenty of blame to around and Cutler will get his fair share.
Still, at this point I'm more inclined to blame the offensive issues on Pace who let a lot of players walk OR let Fox talk him into letting them walk, who agreed to or flat out hired the Log and who, in general skimped the team on offensive talent by lacking foresight.
well, i feel the same thing in a way.. i just feel that for whatever (or should I say many) reasons this love story Cutler & Bears is going to have a sad ending. we just didnt click and a change of scenery for both us should be in the books soon, and could do us good. this is like a marriage way over due
However we spin the Cutler saga (and I am not taking sides for the obvious reasons) the FO is only bound to him until the end of this year as far as guaranteed money is concerned. There is no heir apparent waiting in the wings and quite frankly Free Agency will yield us nothing. So I think we have to draft a QB next year but whether it is BPA in the 1st or 2nd round is anyone's guess.
I am far from sure it's Cutler. Far from sure. Not even sure how big a part he may play. It's more about the QB kind of throwing a halo effect on the offense in general. So how much of that is true? How much does a QB really affect the play and attitude of the whole offense? I'd be lying if I said I knew. Just stuff going through my mind as he is the only moving part that has not been changed out and the results are the same. Just not even sure it means anything. All I know that it looks like we might be seeing more of the same and what a waste.... How often do you get a schedule like this?
I hear Brian Hoyer can be had for cheap, Imagine all the talent we could get by saving all that money on Cutler's contact.... I kid, some people argued that after the Tressman era. I don't think anyone would argue that we should be actively look for a replacement via the draft. I really thought we were taking Paxton Lynch at 9.

I have long been wondering the same thoughts. When is it time to fish, and when is it time to Cut(ler) bait?
Cutler is the best QB the Bears have had, statistically. Yes, he has a pouty face, and reporters don't like him. So? We've all discussed the issues with crappy OCs, crappy O Lines, crappy receivers. Ditto for interceptions. But the guy cares. He wants to win and sacrifices himself, sometimes when he shouldn't.
You know what I keep coming back to? Who was a QB we used to win with? A QB who wasn't really accurate, or really all that skilled. Heck, he only had good vision in one eye. No more hints, we all know the punky QB was a winner.
The question is, what did he have that Cutler doesn't? He made the guys around him better. He got it done. I'm more of the opinion this year than before, that whatever that X factor is, that McMahon had, Cutler doesn't. For that missing X factor, and for the good of all, we need to get Cutler's replacement lined up. The sooner the better.
Unfortunaltely, the thought that we had pretty much fixed the team over the last two years just got beaten down and smashed to smithereens. We still need a lot of work in FA and the draft next year. But we also can no longer afford to ignore the QB position either.
So after all that, all I have to say is it has to be the X factor. Now could somebody please tell us what that X factor is?

I don't know and I'm not sure such a thing exists except in the imagination of sports writers. McMahon was nothing special as a QB and didn't need to be. He had a GOAT RB, a GOAT defense, and a top notch OL. Any decent QB would have success with all that to work with.

Yeah, that's all part of it. But when Fuller was in, we would lose and look like crap doing it. I keep remembering the Vikings game where McMahon was out for a hospital stay and we were losing. He irritated Ditka on the sidelines until he pulled Fuller, Mac stepped in and turned the game around.
