What seems to be confusing some is that Poles realized he screwed up w/the Chase trade and couldn't get a WR that could help Fields this year in the draft or FA the way a guy like Moore could. That's why he was willing to give up a future 1st; to help his qb this year get a #1 WR.
Doing this early also meant he could go into FA and the draft knowing what he needed and didn't need; so he wasn't giving up max value in the trade; to get the rest of the roster dealt with in a way he couldn't if he waited until draft night to get max value.
TBH even if it def turns out as a mistake, im not gonna hold Clay against Poles because at that exact moment it seemed as a decent try. If a try makes sense to me, than I understand it, as we need to take so many factors in account. I would probably try to do the same, lets not forget at that point we were standing ok, so it def makes a lot of sense.
This ^^^ has been reported from multiple reputable NFL sources. When Poles gave that interview a few days before the trade and was talking about acquiring "a player", he was clearly signaling that was what he wanted to finalize the deal with Carolina.
Their GM was reluctant at first but ultimately agreed which means that both GMs valued Moore more highly than moving up just one round in a draft two years away in the future. Sorry, anyone arguing that "3 FRPs" is better is just complaining to complain. Bears had that deal on the table a week ago it sounds like and held out for Moore.
Right on cue, here Ballard trying to do damage control. Also been widely reported by reputable sources that the Colts made a strong offer for the #1 pick (that fact should surprise no one here) but lost out. They will probably draft someone at #4 next month and then claim that he "was their guy all along". Sure....and I'm the King of France.
How anyone can complain about the fact that Poles got a 2nd in 2025 instead of a 1 when DJ FREAKIN MOORE was included in the deal is beyond me.
I know you know some of these guys personally. Glad to see some of that insight. I never knew his middle name until now.

You nailed it, Ric. Poles clearly was pushing hard for two things: A) get the trade done early so he could head into FA knowing what he had and B) he wanted a young player, particularly a WR, as part of the deal.
He was willing to give up the proverbial "3 FRPs" to get it. And by "give up", he didn't give up much. He got 2 FRPs and 2 2nds. That's still excellent.
Poles was clear mid-season (at CC trade) that the FA class for WRs sucked this year. It does. Myers is the probably the best one and he's a #3 guy only. The draft doesn't look good for high-end WR talent either. JSN is probably the #1 guy in the draft and he missed almost his entire 2022 college season with injury.
Otherwise you'd be looking at older stopgaps like Hopkins, OBJ, or Evans.

Didn't he actually get 3FRPs and 2 2nds? Just that one of the FRPs was a 2018 FRP that also happened to be the first WR off the board at 24 for that year.

+1 to you and riczaj01 on this. And even if we got an old guy like Hopkins, I figure that about the time Fields was really getting a chemistry with the guy - Hopkins would ether be on the decline or be gone from the team. Poles in investing in a bright future with these ascending young players. That is best.

Like many others, I really didn't want to fall past 7, and was hoping for no less than 5.... But honestly, with what we got, you have to love the trade. we are still going to get a good player at 9 assuming Poles can pick 'em. We'll find out.
