And he's even better than a 1st round pick because he:

1. Is proven to be a stud at the NFL level. Any drafted kid is iffy to some extent. I was reading a few months ago that ~50% of first round picks bust. Certainly many disappoint and underperform the vision the drafting team has envisioned.
2. Is a veteran who doesn't have to transition from college. DJ helps Fields day-1 as a stud. A 2025 pick doesn't help Fields now. And DJ is young and not some old guy on the decline.

Hmmmm. A 2025 1st round pick who may or may not be NFL material, or instant proven stud help now? Call me stupid, because I'm taking the proven stud help now. The guy is young, ascending - and even comes with an affordable contract. What's not to love about this?

With his new extension done, a 1st and a 3rd would would be a very plausible offer.

The deal Poles got was beyond my fantasy dreams. Seriously. One year ago the future looked so bleak for the Bears. But now we have just acquired DJ Moore and ALSO have 10 draft picks lined up - including 8 picks in the top-5 rounds. Six picks in the first 4 rounds & a top-10 overall pick of the upcoming draft. And we have two 1st round picks next year. And we are flush with cap money to spend. This is all beyond our wildest dreams of a year ago.

He's done a fantastic job thus far. There were lots of lots of naysayers who said Bears would never get the #1 pick, no one is gonna trade with them, you're never gonna get multiple 1sts, etc., etc., etc.

They were wrong. It took a lotta breaks to go our way but Poles made it work. Thus far, he's executed the perfect teardown--tank--setup for rebuild. He nailed it.

We just got an excellent haul of draft picks and young #1 WR without having to trade away draft capital or pay for a ridiculous contract. Look at his cap hits going forward -- they're CHEAP.

This is why its very important for teams to tank. Imagine if we didn't have the #1 overall pick. I'm willing to bet we don't get DJ Moore or all these great picks. The #1 overall pick was a gold mine. #2 Houston needs a QB badly and if we had the #2 overall pick. Sure we might of gotten some picks but not what we got with the #1 overall.

Now its up to Poles to not screw up the picks. If a top QB falls to #9. I'm all for us trading down again and getting more picks.

And its plausible to say, with the dearth of talent they have on offense now, that the pick next year from the Panthers could be a top 10 pick.

I'm with you on that, motm. I've run that mock draft sim repeatedly yesterday, and once you are down to that #9 pick of the draft, you are in a tier of talent that extends from there, down into the upper 2nd round. If a team wants that pick and is willing to pay well for it, we'd be nuts not to accept that offer. I don't think you really lose anything, and you gain substantially. You might even harvest a 2024 1st round pick. That would mean 3 first round picks next year - in a rebuild that is going to REQUIRE a great 2024 draft year to go with our 2023 draft year. JMO.

What seems to be confusing some is that Poles realized he screwed up w/the Chase trade and couldn't get a WR that could help Fields this year in the draft or FA the way a guy like Moore could. That's why he was willing to give up a future 1st; to help his qb this year get a #1 WR.

Doing this early also meant he could go into FA and the draft knowing what he needed and didn't need; so he wasn't giving up max value in the trade; to get the rest of the roster dealt with in a way he couldn't if he waited until draft night to get max value.

And that is a great point, Ric, that stands out to me about Poles. Nobody gets a GM who bats .1000 and who never makes mistakes. Even the elite GMs in any professional sport, will have a percentage of mistakes. It happens. What matters MOST is that you have a manager that learns from mistakes and makes adjustments - you hit the nail on the head there regarding Poles. He didn't try to pound the square peg in a round hole here. He quickly adapted and made a great adjustment here.
