That's a good point. Some years it doesn't matter and better players were drafted later. But sometimes it matters very much. A number of the best players ever to play the game have been taken at that #2 spot. Several Hall of Fame players too. Wouldn't it be just like the Bears bad luck to miss out on a great/elite player at #2 and get a bust with their later pick in the draft?
I admit this is a selfish thing on my part. But as a fan, having suffered through the recent crap seasons - and this super crap season in particular - I would kindof like to see us have a shot at an elite player. I really don't even care what position it would be, if we could get a kid that will be elite for us for many many years to come. Maybe even one of those future Hall of Fame guys.
I ask you. Is it better to pass on all of that just so we can say we beat a 1-win 49er team in 2016... a steaming pile of crap team?
Hours after we won that game it would be forgotten by most of us. It would be a meaningless game in a meaningless year. But drafting an elite player who is a rock-solid player for the next 8 or 10 years - wouldn't that be better than the win over the 49ers on Sunday?
QB Kizer, QB Watson, QB Trubisky, DE Garrett, DE Allen.
You could be 100% right. And I also understand that even if we do pick at #2 the Bears could still get it wrong... wouldn't that be just like the Bears luck? But my hope is that they do get it right this draft AND they also have the pick high enough to get "The Guy" who will be a cornerstone for the unit he lands on. Granted that's probably a pipe-dream, but it is my hope.
Today I was looking over some of the Bears great drafts of the past (I'm not being sarcastic here). In 1965 we had two top-5, first round picks in that draft. We picked 2 future Hall of Fame players - Dick Butkus & Gale Sayers. It would have been Papa Bear picking in that draft. Halas was also the guy who drafted our Hall of Fame QB, Sid Luckman as the #2 overall pick of the draft. Halas must have been a brilliant football guy.
