Here is a guy who agrees with me 100% on the 2023 WR class, especially on the guys who are likely to slip into the second round and be available for the Bears to draft. We especially agree on Johnston and Boutte. For good reasons, Johnston is starting to slide on the draft boards. I am telling you guys right now that, if Johnston and Boutte are both on the board, and Poles takes Johnston, I am going to throw something at my TV. More than ever, I believe that Boutte is the best WR1 candidate in the second round, and maybe in the entire draft.
Josh Downs may be the next Tyler Lockett, but Poles won’t take him because he is small. I will be watching Rashee Rice today in the senior bowl, but the early reports on him was that he did not look very impressive.
Darnell Mooney is small and Poles loves him. Again...why do we assume we know more than we think we do about what Poles likes?

He didn’t bring in Mooney. He brought in Pringle, EQ, Pettis, Harry, Claypool. These guys are all around 200 pounds or more. The Bears offense expects WRs to be good blockers. He says he likes tall and fast. That is what he has brought in. Downs weighs 175 and Dell weighs 163. They are small. I would be willing to take one of these guys at slot receiver, because they are great route runners. That would really help Fields. Given his statements and the height/weight of the guys he’s brought in, wouldn’t you honestly be surprised if he passed over Johnston and took Downs or Dell? His track record goes the opposite direction.

Track record? The guy hasn't even had a full offseason yet at the helm. I think maybe it's a little early to make such extrapolations yet.

He says he likes tall, fast guys. He brought in tall, fast guys. That is the record. Maybe it changes this year.
Getsy might be able to influence him. I saw an interview with Getsy at the Senior Bowl. He, Cox, and others have the same opinion on Tank Dell. Nobody could cover this guy. He is extremely fast and a great route runner. The problem is that he weighs 163 pounds and stands 5-8. Downs weighs 172. We don't need any more 6-4, 6-5 fast guys. EQ and Claypool are enough for me. V. Jones is another guy who has speed but can't run routes (or catch the ball). Fields needs a precision route runner with good hands.
Boutte is about the same size as Pringle, V. Jones, and Pettis, so I assume he passes the Poles test on size. I would be satisfied with Downs, Dell, Boutte in the second round, but the small guys at 170 are not going to be as good blockers as EQ and Claypool. The trade-off is that Fields gets a precision route runner. I'll take it.
Michael Wilson had the best showing in the actual game. I still don’t know why Rice wasn’t playing. I don’t recall seeing Tank Dell in the game. They did show a clip from practice where he showed off his speed and made nice catch on a long pass. By contrast, Mingo dropped a TD pass that hit him in hands. Getsy was watching the play and said, “Gotta catch that.”

OK...since you either haven't heard him talk about Mooney, or are choosing to ignore HIS STATEMENTS on him, I'll post some for you:
“Bright spot was Darnell Mooney,” Poles said. “As guys have come in to workout, we've had the opportunity just to introduce each other and he stopped in and I was really blown away by the person.
“He’s got a quiet confidence about him, and he’s hungry to be special. I’m always looking for guys that keep raising their own bar in terms of where they want to go. He just wants to be special, and you can feel that in him.”
“I love him more than I did when I first walked in the door,” Poles said. “I think he’s a special human being, first and foremost, and a really good football player.”
His "track record" is all of less than 1 year long while he was executing a tear down. Thats not a track record. Dante Pettis is not "big", and he was all of 185 coming out of college. Byron Pringle isn't exactly big either. Hell, if Pringle is big, then I'm friggen huge at 6'2'', 230...and I'm not huge, or big by NFL standards.
Here is Poles talking about what he looks for in a receiver: “They come in different shapes and sizes and speeds,” Poles said. “I think it comes down to playmakers. I think we saw that in the Super Bowl. Guys that can make plays when their number is called, and that’s what we look for, and you can see that on college tape.”
He continues: “I will say one of the benefits of the combine is you get to see some of the physical traits as well — what sets them apart,” he said. “Is it size? Is it length? Is it explosion? Is it speed? We’ll put all that together. But I would say that all boils down just to being a playmaker.”
Here's Eberflus talking about what he wants in a receiver: “You want explosive, athletic ability there that can produce chunk plays,” he said. “So if you throw a screen, you want a guy that can take it and go for 15 or all the way. The controlled passing game is just that, but the athletes are the guys that make you miss. … So you have guys that are quick, explosive, strong."
Poles came from a KC organization that drafted Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman...both who are 5'10''. What I would be surprised with is if Johnston is still available when Downs or Dell are going to be drafted. I won't be surprised if they draft a smaller receiver if they think he's the BEST receiver.

I hope you’re right. How do you feel about taking Johnston instead of a smaller guy who is a much better route runner such as Boutte, Downs, Dell? I think a great route running slot receiver is more valuable than adding one more tall, fast WR.

”Playmaker” is an amorphous word.
I haven't thought about it, and I probably won't, because I don't think its a highly likely scenario I need to concern myself with.
As for playmaker being amorphous...uh, yeah, which was alluded to in Poles quote "They come in all shapes, sizes, and speeds."

I think when it comes time for the Bears to draft a WR in the second round, Johnston, Mingo, or other tall, fast guys will be there. So will these smaller guys who are much better route runners. I will ask you this question again at the start of the second round.
Women also come in all sizes, shapes, hair colors, etc., but men still have preferences. If you asked every GM to define the word “playmaker,” I think you’d get more than a couple definitions.
