QB or Pass Rusher for our 1st round pick?

I don't think you should be going by history though. Makes no sense to compare the QB position now to the way it was 25 years ago because it's drastically changed. Would make more sense to keep it within 10 years. Here's what is considered the best QBs in the last 10 years.

Six out of the 10 were drafted in the first round and three were the first overall. I think Wilson was the only non-first round pick that actually started right away. Brady, Brees and Romo played behind a veteran first.

Well that goes without saying if only because a top QB will play at the top of his game far longer that a top DE or OLB.  The way some of these guys are getting injured today they may have as short a career at the top as some RBs.  Watt is out for the rest of this year needing more back surgery.  Maybe he came back too fast.

The fact that for a QB it is more mental and about gaining experience is just one more reason why some tend to get far better as time passes and if they don't get too beat up career ending injuries are less frequent. IMHO you can still win more easily with a dominant defense than you can with a dominant QB though.

I also agree that those top players like a Brady or a Dent or a Bennett and others who were drafted late or not at all are outliers and have to be discarded from any significant statistical analysis.  The best will almost always be drafted early and by that I don't necessarily mean top five but many who've consistently been the best for the longest time were top five or top ten picks.  One single year of stats won't tell the whole story either because some of these guy never had double digit sacks before and never will again and some will.  Career stats are a better basis for an analysis.

Here's Garrett's stats through 3 games and at least he fits the basic size requirement for a OLB/Rusher in Fangio scheme.  Floyd never did and won't until he can put on and keep on another 15-20lbs of muscle.

So far there are no Mannings in the 2017 draft and there aren't likely to be.  Archie doesn't have any more young'uns in college.  I don't even see a Luck or an Elway whose dad's either played pro QB or coached in college at high level where those guys were groomed their entire lives to be pro QBs.

It's not so much just Ric but many people will selectively reinforce their beliefs by avoiding facts that run counter to those beliefs.  I don't think you can ever have all of the facts when it comes to this stuff but I tend to prefer as many as I can get to base my opinions and decisions on.  But yeah, I'd take Manning over Miller any day provided I was guaranteed a Manning.  He may well be a once in a century QB not just once in a decade.

Besides, team who desperately need a QB and who draft one over another BPA usually live to regret it and we are not desperate for a QB no matter what some would like to tell themselves or at least we won't be if Cutler is still around.  It's just like divorcing one crazy manipulative bitch only to marry her twin isn't gonna change the outcome at all.

I prefer not to reach at all but especially not for a QB.
