By the end of the season the Bears will know whether or not they want to keep Massie around any longer ... he will have made their decision crystal clear by then . Till then , let's just hope that he plays well enough to help us win more than we lose . I'm not 'sold' on him , but I'm not negative about him yet either .
I can't speak for his run blocking, since i have no video of those...but here is every pass play from nfl.com Not saying Massie looked good...i agree with JABF that he looks slow...but did he get the job done?
I say yes...he didn't look pretty doing it, but considering the Defense they faced, he's on a new team working with new guys...he/they should get better.
Honestly you can only pin one sack on Massie imo...sure you can throw in a second one if you want to count the 4th qtr one, but i would then ask why is Jay dropping 4-5 yards back, out of the shotgun LoL
Just realized nfl videos not supported lol here's the link
You do know that every QB retreats 3-4 yards on a shotgun snap right? Brock goes from standing on the 42 yard line to standing on the 39 yardline, so a drop of of 3 yards.
Yes, Jay retreat 5 yards, but its normal to a QB to drop back out of a shotgun snap. Lets not let the Jay hate cover for the fact that the OL couldn't block on Sunday. That may have been the best DL as far as pass rushing that they willow l face all season.
I also timed all the sacks with the game clock, and the only sack that lasted more than 3 seconds was the one where the pocket broke down and Jay rolled to his right almost back to the LOS.
I hate having to defend Jay, but the performance of the OFF on Sunday can't be totally pinned on Jay (and I know you aren't saying that, so its more of a general comment.)
No Jay hate on that thought lol....just don't think it is smart football to drop back that far when you have a DE lined up on the outside of your TE who is releasing to route after block.
Maybe they are taught to block this way on that play...but Massie doesn't have a chance unless the TE steers the DE back to the inside for Massie.
All I know is that Jay walked into a couple of sacks and this was one of them Imo....

Yeah we agree on most of it, and like most message boards are arguing semantically. The entire OL didn't play well, which isn't surprising against an elite pass rushing team. Without being in team meetings its hard to know exactly what the blocking game plan was. I was surprised how little help Massie got, and I hope as the middle (RG-C-LG) plays together, picking up the stunts will get better.
On a couple of the sacks Jay had no time, and on at least one when he got flushed he walked into the blitzing DB Langford was picking up.
All around, they (QB + OL + RBs/TE) have to do better, or we will never get to see Whit running open down the field and we will get to see Hoyer the Destroyer taking snaps.
Overall it was a poorly played second half including the play calling as well IMHO. The Bears failure to run the ball effectively was the root cause of most of the pressure so I'll accept the fact that put the entire line in a bad spot. Massie may have struggled more than others but no one got an A grade in that game.
Biggsy and a few others have presented some analysis of the play calling and I can see little or nothing that was done to counter the stunts or full tilt rush from the edge. No draws or delays, one screen pass, no quick slants from a 3 step drop with Jay under center. Just a whole lot of shotgun formations Houston knew we wouldn't run from.
Anytime you're that predictable you may we well hand the other guys your play list or just invite them into the huddle. They knew what we were gonna do anyway. That was pretty obvious. If we regroup and do better on Monday night all's forgiven and if not then next weeks threads and posts will look a lot like this weeks.
Losing is not half as bad as not trying hard enough to win.
So ..... after four pages of posts, what is the consensus? Can Massie get better?
I don't know how much better he will get. IMO he will get better integrated with the rest of the line and hopefully the OL schemes will work out better to account for his limitations.
