And this is really my position about him too. I suppose we could look at is as it's not his fault he was drafted where he was despite all of the question marks that surrounded him but he was and now there are reasonable expectations that he live up to that draft status and answer back.
A player drafted in the top ten as an edge rusher needs to show up with some sacks and consistent pressure at the very least. We have other OLBs who are capable 3 down players so even if Floyd isn't that productive year one IMHO he still needs to provide a pass rush consistent with his draft status.
As for how Fangio believes he should handle Floyd and motivate him that's up to Vic Fangio. As I said, him I will give the benefit of the doubt to but Floyd hasn't earned that yet so I remain skeptical until he proves me wrong. And I hope he does.
The only thing I would add to this is to look beyond sacks. Does the pressure he brings lead to sacks for others or QB hits? Those are all important things that would be productive to the team.
That works for me too brother. As long as he can disrupt via some penetration and occupy pass blockers and draw attention that makes DCs account for him he's adding to the rush. But if they can neutralize him with just one OT or worse yet a RB if he stunts then he's not much more of a pest than a few we already have who can do that. It's sacks and or pressure that forces bad throws we need from him.

Is he not long as fack? He should be running around with his arms in air, ad waving like he just don't care....
You know swat master Floyd DE in da hizhouze!! Boi!!! Football is back!!!!!!
With Floyd's lack luster Preseason I'm some what nervous if he can at least improve. Sure its his first year in the NFL and I don't expect much from him year 1 but seeing him playing against 2nd and even 3rd string players and not count for at least 1 sack is bothersome. Bullard seems to have outplayed him over the preseason.
I still wish we drafted Tunsil over him but it is what it is. Hopefully this is just a way to make Floyd play better.

I'm not particularly enthralled with either of Pace's 1st round picks as of yet. Hoping for the best but yeah I'm concerned at this point that we made poor choices.

Given what we now know about McPhee we can also see that the need for a pass rusher was greater than the need for a LT. Especially one who'd collected some black marks prior to the draft that had other teams downgrading him or taking him off their boards entirely.
What I want to address is much the same thing I just did about Kevin White.
No matter how much talent or potential a player may have his availability to play every week outstrips even that. I've been a semi-pro musician most of my life and over the years I've seen some gorgeous guitars I'd have loved to have owned and played. But if they can't be set up and adjusted properly to play them or won't stay in tune when I'm on stage they're useless to me. I buy them to play not just to display.
At a certain point in time players who've been highly drafted like White and Floyd need to understand they're not in college any longer and like Vic Fangio said, they're playing with the big boys now. They're playing against experienced players. Men who may be nearly as good or even better than they are. So "Show Time" and the "Underwear Olympics" are over now. Now it's time to suck it up and prove they can play some football at the NFL level.
Eventually we have to stop coddling these guys and just put them out there to succeed or fail and adjust from there. As long as they're being sheltered on the bench or the weekly injury report we're never gonna know whether they can play well at this level or not. I honestly can't see the value of mickey mousing around with one more 1st round pick for 3 or 4 years like we did with Shea McClellin.
If Floyd was drafted to be an edge rusher then put him out there on passing downs and let's find out whether he is or he isn't. I'd think they'd want to know that much sooner than we did with McClellin. He's not gonna get any better by not playing.
