Well, if you have to start playing Yoda mind games to get the player you thought you got, you got the wrong player.
I might have confused myself there....
Everyone's value has an optimum, if you have set of strategies to bring that out in people, (and Fangio has a long history of it) go ahead and use Jedi mind tricks.
I think this is how Fangio thinks Floyd will be motivated. With Shea he seemed to try to praise and talk him up to the media because he needed confidence. Floyd might need some anger to push him.
Hopefully whatever he tries works this time. Personally I think so far they've been a little to "cushy" on his psyche so if this can get a fire lit under him great but I don't much like the thought that a rookie top ten pick requires mind games to get that done.

I think of all great modern coaches as sports psychologists, so nothing bothers me when it comes to method and madness thereof.

I'm willing to give Fangio the benefit of the doubt because he's earned it. Floyd hasn't gotten that far with me so far. I expected to see more out of him in the preseason games and less being sidelined with illness and "owies" than he was.
I freely admit to having a negative bias against SEC "tweener" types sox and I really hope it's misplaced with Floyd because we don't need another 1st round defensive failure again right now.

+1 A great coach understands the mind tricks to use - specific to each individual player. Fangio is the master at it.

We'll see. I'm not sure if too many people have a higher opinion of Fangio than I do, but I dunno....

Hope you don't mind me taking liberties with your post, but
more like Yoda speak this is...
Understand the mind tricks to use, great coaches do. Individual players, specific to each, yes? The master at it, Fangio is.
All people are motivated differently. Some players need constant praise to play at a high level and others need to be told to step their game up to get the juices flowing. All coaches should have a bead on how to properly motivate their players.
Of course not all coaches are right all the time, but I think Fangio has earned himself the benefit of the doubt
