Last year Shea was all the DC ever wanted. This is a coach doing his thing, motivating his guy and getting him ready.
I imagine it is which is why Fangio is reminding him to stop behaving like he's still at the U of Georgia or down home in some dirt poor ramshackle town in Georgia and start behaving like a highly paid pro football player. This is "nice boy" who needs to learn quickly that "nice" is not what NFL OLBs are about.
This kid got babied more in camp and preseason than AJ did last year and no one complained 'til now. When you take a kid like this as a top ten pick you expect him to come in and make an impact and he's done very little to show he even deserves many snap ahead of at least three or four others including Acho and Jones.
I'll be honest. I didn't like the idea of the pick at all before we made and liked it even less when we traded up to get him. These SEC Conference "tweener" types who are great college players always seem to disappoint greatly in the pros. We keep getting fed great things about his physical attributes but I've seen a kid whose been outplayed by Jonathan Bullard, a 3rd round DL pick, and all of the OLBs either for that matter.
I understand that he's a bit of a project but hopefully not the kind you have to build from the ground up and I also hope he can actually play the position he was drafted to play because I've heard some of the same uncertainty expressed about where to play him that we did with Shea McClellin our last undersized college whiz kid. We can't afford another swing and a miss like him.
i just hope our DC is good enough to make use of his speed and hide his size. Sam A made more plays, experience counts.
I think a lot of this is coach speak. He came in a bit raw...so this is really not surprising that he's inconsistent. It's Fangios job to figure out what he's good at right now and get him on the field to do it, while developing him further. I wouldn't over react one way or another...someone brought it up but Fangio also gushed about Shea last season. Perhaps he thought thats what Shea needed at that time, and perhaps he thinks this will get Floyd to respond as well. Different tactics for different guys.

Regardless of what you think of Shea's talent, he had to be a PTSD candidate after all the position switches and coaching changes. I assume that Fangio was just building him up by going public with all the praise.

Yeah...thats my point. Fangio probably felt Shea needed that mental boost. He probably feels like Floyd can handle a public smack down and he will respond the way Fangio wants it. A little psychology.

As long as we see flashes of high level play from Floyd initially, I'll be OK. From the little I saw in PS, I think he has the ability to disrupt offenses.
After that we will need to see ongoing development out of him. If he is not making serious contributions on the defense by weeks 8 - 12 I will get worried about the pick. But not before that.

And this is really my position about him too. I suppose we could look at is as it's not his fault he was drafted where he was despite all of the question marks that surrounded him but he was and now there are reasonable expectations that he live up to that draft status and answer back.
A player drafted in the top ten as an edge rusher needs to show up with some sacks and consistent pressure at the very least. We have other OLBs who are capable 3 down players so even if Floyd isn't that productive year one IMHO he still needs to provide a pass rush consistent with his draft status.
As for how Fangio believes he should handle Floyd and motivate him that's up to Vic Fangio. As I said, him I will give the benefit of the doubt to but Floyd hasn't earned that yet so I remain skeptical until he proves me wrong. And I hope he does.

The only thing I would add to this is to look beyond sacks. Does the pressure he brings lead to sacks for others or QB hits? Those are all important things that would be productive to the team.
