After seeing him play OC in the preseason, i would rather Larson take the snaps early and Whitehair take over after the bye week (excluding injuries).
That's more in line with my thinking to Mike or if not the bye week whenever he's able to produce better than Larsen in practice. The way I see it is Larsen can't struggle anymore than Grasu did at times last year and he's a much tougher give no quarter vet similar to Olin.
IMHO NFL OCs need to develop an attitude that says "I'm not a nice guy" and then play like it. If we keep drafting choir boy OL then we not only have to give them time to adapt physically but mentally as well and developing that "you shall not pass" attitude is part of it.
I went back and refreshed my memory of Whitehair's scouting reports. He should ultimately be a very solid guy for us, but he shouldn't be gifted a starting position. He should have to fight for it. Once he gets the NFL game down though, he should be an awesome lineman.
"A three-star recruit out of high school, Whitehair became a starter as a redshirt freshman. He began his career at left guard and right tackle before moving to left tackle as a junior in 2014, earning Second Team All-Big 12 honors. Whitehair returned to left tackle as a senior captain in 2015.
"I think he's probably better at guard in our league, but he might be able to play all five positions if needed," an AFC scout told NFLDraftScout.com. "He knows how to neutralize speed off the edge or quickness inside ... very, very well-coached and it shows on film."

Yep. This is a farm boy strong kid who seems born to play on the OL. Most of us probably went to HS with guys like this and some of us played with them in HS or college. He may well be the mos natural OL of the younger guys we've drafted and I'm glad we were still able to get him when we did.
The scouting report also ranked him as the most NFL ready OL in the draft and I can already se that in him. He's very intelligent and seems to learn quickly which may be why Fox would like to play him at OC to take advantage of that.
Hick and Goldman both confirmed what his college coach said about him having very strong hands and grip and being able to control bigger DL with that. That's a pretty ideal trait for a smaller interior OL. I think if this kid was 6'5" or 6'6" and 315 lbs at the Combine he may have been the first OT drafted but they had him ranked lower and as an OG due to his height and arm length.
I like the article and it bring forward lots of the concerns I mentioned.
What are you doing to you OL player development? What happens now with Grasu? So now that C has all of a sudden become Whirehairs best position despite what our eyes tell us, does that mean that he regresses at G? Do we want him at G later?
Fox does seem to have an inclination to change things for the OL at the 11th hour. He didn't make Long a T until right before the opener last season. I really wonder if he does not appreciate the time it takes for the cohesiveness to develop on the OL. It would surprise me if after all these years at coaching he did not understand that.
Having said all of that, is a Sitton is available, I think you have to take him and we did. Kudos to the FO.
I guess what I don;t appreciate if Fox trying to blow smoke up my ass. (well, I consider my ass a one way only portal so anything going in is not good). Tell us what the real plan is, or tell us you will work it out as we go along because we had to take Sitton, but don;t tell me that we now have an opportunity to play Whitehair at his best position which is C. Then you just come out stupid.
I don't assume anything about Grasu or Whitehair on the OL. And I don't think that Pace or Fox do either.
We just signed a 3x pro bowl guard. I can't look at this as anything but a significant upgrade for our OL. Assuming Long is good to go, he will probably start at LG and Whitehair will be 2nd team with Larson starting at center. Just my speculation. We all know Fox will keep all his plans ultra-super secret until the last minute when league rules require him to go public with it.
I actually like giving Whitehair time to come up to speed in the NFL as opposed to throwing him straight in. My guess is he is the Bears long term LG on our OL. He may play center or guard on the OL over the next few weeks. I am sure that both Pace and Fox want the players to be able to play on multiple positions on the OL. It allows us to obsorb injuuries on the line and still play at a fairly high level.
When Grasu returns my guess is he will be in TC competing to be the starting center.
So either the Bears bench a 3d round pick or a 2d round pick or if their lucky get traded of a 6 round pick that is how Pace does it right. SORRY SIGNING SITTON WAS THE DUMEST MOVE EVER. Sure it cured a problem today but made 100 bigger problems tomorrow.

I'll change gears to another part of the article : the worry about bringing in a new PK one week before the season starts . Seriously ? Correct me if I'm wrong but all of these guys have been practicing since day 1 .
The holder looks back at the PK , the PK nods his head , the LS snaps the ball , the holder catches/ places it , the PK kicks it .
Yet writers make it sound like it's brain surgery & they're all gonna freakout and forget how to do something they've been doing for YEARS .
For cripes sake they're professionals , and it's not anywhere near as 'hard' as these twerps try to make it sound .

Even if that were true, and I don't believe it is. We still have 16 games to play this year before "tomorrow" comes and I'd prefer to win as many of those as possible and then deal with "tomorrow" when it comes.

How is this a Problem? Getting a good RG that will improve the Team and adds leadership. Sitton will be motivated as hell and he knows some of the current Packers offensiv Playbook. That's not bad for now. Until then, Whitehair gets a few games to get it going as Sub and if he does well, Larsen will be on the bench. That's all without thinking about injuries that WILL happen and with a possible Grasu return in 1 year. That Grasu that was too weak last season and now misses a whole year.

If you ever listened to Mannelly talk about LS and kicking, there is a lot that goes into it, the LS has to know how much spin and air to put onto the ball to get it to the holder for the holder to get the ball down the way the K likes it. There is a lot of familiarity that goes into being a LS holder and K.
