Listening to 670 this AM it sounds like the team wants Whitehair to play OC, said they think it's his best position; something that Biggs was stating before TC, so the Sitton move just made that an easy decision.
After seeing him play OC in the preseason, i would rather Larson take the snaps early and Whitehair take over after the bye week (excluding injuries).

Man...who pissed in Haugh's Cheerios? Listen...when you have a chance to get a guy like Sitton...you get him and worry about "developing guys" or where guys will fit a year from now when they come back from injury, later. If Whitehair can play center...great! When Grasu is healthy and comes back...which probably won't be until sometime in training camp next year he can compete for the job....and if you have too many talented linemen...someone explain to me how thats a problem?
We don't have to find something negative in every move thats made...but I guess I should expect no less from the media.
1) Not just a waiver wire depth player but a legit top-10 talent at his position who happens to bolster what was a shaky positional area. Pace got lucky he was available (that's rare) but he I give him credit for being decisive and getting the deal done.
2) Haugh is an unreadable hack. He finds a way to complain about everything. Ignore and done.
3) Yeah, Fox in particular needs to show improvement at least this year and playoffs no later than next or his seat will be getting hot. I like coaches and GM motivated to win.
4) If the situation were reversed, Green Bay would pilfer our guy in two seconds flat so dont feel guilty one bit. They could have kept him but chose to save the $6m instead.
They were down to something like 4 or 5 million on cap space so maybe they didn't have much of an option.
Yes, but that was before they released Sitton. They had enough to get through the season (emergency fund) and nothing more. I think they bit the bullet and cut him loose cuz they anticipate needing the extra space to re-sign their younger players next offseason.

LOL, I agree completely. OMG, it's possible if our young guys all pan out that we MAY have TOO MANY GOOD OLs next year!
I think most of what I want to say has already been said. I've heard/read several media people lament the fact that Sitton is already 30 years old and the Bears look desperate. I call Bullshit. If he doesn't have some recurring injury issue, 30 is prime time for O-Linemen and it gives us two to three years with a Pro-Bowl offensive guard. I think JJ mentioned that he thought it looks a lot like an Orlando Pace signing. I respectfully disagree, I think it looks a lot MORE like Reuben Brown when Angelo brought him in and he solidified our interior O-Line for 3 years.
As far as what we do with who, I suggest we do not lose sleep over that. That kind of stuff tends to work itself out. When you have question marks in a position group due to injury or inexperience, grabbing a guy like Sitton is just a damn good thing no matter what. When Grasu comes back, he'll get his chance, but that wont be until next year anyway and a lot can happen in an NFL year. Whitehair will get his chance. It's a long damn season, and someone WILL get hurt and they will need him. That is IF he doesn't start at Center. If he DOES start at Center, he has the benefit of playing between two of the leagues best and very experienced Guards. Not like he's getting thrown in there with scrubs on either side.
The 5 best should play and if that means getting Whitehair in at Center, or keeping Larson in there for now, I don't really care. As an old O-Lineman myself, I concur completely that the main thing to be concerned about is the Chemistry issue along the line. That IS important and I do not want to minimize that, but the bottom line is that we could lose someone in the first series of the Houston game and the chemistry is out the window anyway. Yes, it's nice to have chemistry among the 5, but it's not realistic to expect that to be there all the time anyway. Sooner or later you're going to have a replacement in there and so it goes. You adapt and move on. That's exactly what Pace has done; he made moves in the off season, two guys surprised him with retirement, one guy had a season ending injury (Grasu), our main guy (Long) has a significant shoulder injury that will likely cause him issues the whole season; Pace saw an opportunity, he took advantage of it and we are a better team for it. Kudo's to Ryan Pace for making a decisive move; now it's up to Fox to make them all work together.
I think you hit that one out of the park. Well said.

This. Or if we are way up or down (hopefully not) in a game, bring him then.
LOL, if Pace had NOT taken advantage of this priceless opportunity, fans and sports media people would be screaming bloody murder. Sometimes you just can't win.
I was worried about the OL. Real worried. But now a great player just dropped into our laps. This has to help us for the next few years.
We have had a lot of bad luck with the Bears over the years. This is one of those rare moments when we actually have some good luck come our way. I'm a mighty happy camper.

Yep, I don't see the Pace thing either. I'm more inclined to agree with 4d that it's much closer to a Ruben Brown type move. If we can get two of the three years out of Sitton at or near his Pro Bowl level we come out ahead and if all three then maybe he wins a SB ring with us too.
And if Long isn't hampered by his shoulder too much, we could have the interior run game from hell.
Oh yeah, those two are like having OG versions of Dan Hampton and Steve McMichael. Same warrior type mentality.

That's more in line with my thinking to Mike or if not the bye week whenever he's able to produce better than Larsen in practice. The way I see it is Larsen can't struggle anymore than Grasu did at times last year and he's a much tougher give no quarter vet similar to Olin.
IMHO NFL OCs need to develop an attitude that says "I'm not a nice guy" and then play like it. If we keep drafting choir boy OL then we not only have to give them time to adapt physically but mentally as well and developing that "you shall not pass" attitude is part of it.
