We joke around about the guy, but I'm curious, do you think he can be a decent OC? He's young and doesn't have a lot of experience yet. Is there potential there, or not?
Based on last year, I'd say no. But he seemed to get better later in the year, maybe he was learning as he went. If that's true, We'll have a better ability to answer this after next season.
Yeah, there actually might be some potential there. I have seen some things that make me thing he might be good. The one thing I see that is the biggest concern for me is the lack of adjustments. To me, adjustments are the ultimate expression of knowing your business. You have to know what the other team is doing to you. You have to know what you have to work with to counter that. And last, you have to know what that will do to both your game and the opponents game and how they would counter and then how you would in turn counter that.
You have to do it quick and real time. You have to be ok with risk, you have to really know what you are doing, and I would say really be a student of the game. I have not seen anything like that from Loggains. So I think he may be good, but so far have not seen any indication that he might be great.
The other thing that clouds any real evaluation is continued speculation on his offense. I honestly do not know what is going on. Some speculate that he is running a very conservative, "do not lose the ball" offense at Fox's request, some say that he does not have the people to make it work, some say he is just not good enough.
I don;t know what to think. I know Fox is uber conservative, so the first option may in fact be true. I know Jay Cutler can throw a long ball, but he rarely does any more. Not sure if per FOx, he has clipped his wings to limit turnovers or if he just does not like long plays. So a lot of questions. More questions than answers, but I have seen some decent stuff from him.
All kidding aside, I'm ok with keeping him this year but if there had been a chance to upgrade, I'd have been happy to do that.
Right now, I think you have some HC stubbornness going on. He wants to keep his whole staff (well, at least the ones that did not bolt). I think even if a really good OC knocked on the door, Fox would not have been open to him. I think he drew a line in the sand that he has great coaches and there's nothing to be fixed there.
The Log is hard to evaluate given the injury situation on the offense. Our most consistent players in terms of time on the field - Jordan Howard and Cameron Meredith - improved throughout the year and that's a positive sign for Bears fans when eval'ing Frodo Loggains.
I also think Fox articulated - rather gruffly - why the team went so pass happy in most games, they were playing from behind and needed to score.
I suppose the three questions I have heading forward (or looking back if you want to pull up tape on the 2016 season) are: Why did we fall behind so quickly with the prepared game plan? If the passing game is so effective, and they have such faith in it when we're playing with a slight deficit, why aren't we using those play calls earlier preventing the deficit from beginning?

yeah. Lots of what is said seems to be full of shit.

There was enough times when they weren't that far behind that they still abandoned the run far to often.

yeah... far too conservative, but like I said. Not sure if it's his style or Fox's. It could be Fox's but then it kind of becomes your own when you execute it like that. It's just kind of how you start to call the plays. Not really sure what to make out of in terms of if it's Logg or Fox, but yeah.... the play calling is sometimes a definite head scratcher.

Is it just me or does it seem the Bears like going with an OC with no experience and trying to learn on the job? NFL OC seems to me like a rather complicated job to have. I remember Mike Tice saying he had never called a play before getting his shot as OC of the Bears and that he was calling his son at Pitt for advice.
