No one is a "sure thing". I'd argue the opposite. MOST QBs FAIL (to become winning long-term starters).
I'll rephrase that: the vast majority fail
As far as the cost in picks, realize that Trubisky (for instance) is going to cost you the #3 pick plus a year minimum of development time. There's no free lunch here and no "pro-ready" QBs like Andre Luck in this draft per 99% of the reports I've read.
Just talking about options here and yeah I see Garropolo as a legit option worth looking at and worth considering.
I'm not disagreeing at all with that. I can see the Bears screwing the QB issue up whether they buy a QB or try to draft one. And I do think Garoppolo is a valid option to consider. I'm no judge of what he will turn out to be. If the Bears are most confident that the most "bang for the buck" is to trade draft picks for Garoppolo, then hey, go for it. Especially if they are convinced nobody in this draft is worth a pick.
My fear is that they will overpay for Garoppolo and he will be yet another Bears QB screwup. Pace has had some of his draft picks pan out well. I keep hoping he has a guy spotted in this draft who he believes is solid - and we get that guy. But yes, I get it that there is no sure thing here. And that's in spades when it comes to the Bears. Bad luck seems to follow us.

Perfectly understandable. And let me clear: IF we pull off a trade, Garrapolo may very well fail.
My biggest fear is that we reach for some one-hit wonder, flavor of the month, zone read college "star QB" who has never learned a playbook, read a coverage, or taken a snap from under center and he busts big time. Then you're out the draft pick, a couple years development time, plus the opportunity cost of having passed on who we could have drafted at #3 instead. Then 2-3 years from now we reach again because we are again desperate for someone, anyone that can start cuz we have nothing.
If we draft someone, prepare yourself that he will probably fail.
I'm willing to "pay a little extra" for the 1st scenario because i think the "probably fail" risk is considerably higher in the 2nd.
A lot of people here liked JG as a possible Bears draft pick a few years ago. I agree, hindsight tells us we should have had a lot less faith in Cutler and took him even though QB wasn't a "need" at the time. What changed?

John outFoxed himself in thinking he had discovered Jay Cutler the next Bears QB
David Haugh is an idiot , and anybody who thinks Jimmy G is worth a 1st rd pick + _ , is also an idiot . You've got a 1st rd pick ... use it on Deshaun Watson .
Bold move to trade for Cutler; how'd that work out? Giving up multiple picks, some will be high, isn't the answer when the "bold move" hasn't played more then 2 games, and is in the most qb friendly O system in the NFL.
There is a reason NE drafted another qb, and is now looking to trade Jimmy G; it's matt cassel all over again.
I told you months ago it will happen and I told you why.
Don't compare Jimmy to the others. Jimmy was drafted to replace Brady, but Brady won't go anytime soon. His contract runs to 2020 and by all the Looks, he will Play it out and even extend it. Jimmys contract Ends 2018 and if they want to Keep him, they have to pay him Starters Money. Do you pay Brady and on top of that Jimmy and his 15-20 Million? If they don't trade him this offseason, they risk on losing him for far less than what they will get this year.
That's why they drafted Briscett. They drafted him because they knew they will lose Jimmy. They want to Keep him, but they can't. That's the big difference this time. It's about utilizing the assets they have. They won't get a Top10 pick and I don't see any Team giving up a 1st for him. They will settle in for a high 2nd and something added and it's still more than they will get next year when his contract is over.
I'm sure whoever hires McDaniels will trade for Garoppolo.
Just to add another Point. They Need to sell this Franchise to the fans again. In order to do that, do you think picking a guy like Allen will do that compared to a QB? That shiny new toy and being sexy? What if Pace doesn't want a QB? SF is the Wildcard here, they will take a QB, they aren't interested in drafting a Allen or Fournette. How could you get this right? You trade for the hometown Boy that will be your new shiny toy that will be a selling Point to your fanbase.
AJ McCarron has started a PO game and will be cheaper. Just some more thoughts

Don't care what reason he or the others were drafted for, their performance was the same. Langford was drafted to replace Forte, he couldn't and they just so happened to draft a guy that could. What you were drafted for doesn't mean squat. I think we all know WHY they are trading him, 15-20 mil a year, or guaranteed? a year probably about right, guaranteed you are WAY low.

That's a safe assumption, or they drafted him b/c they saw a bit of Cassel/Hoyer in Jimmy G, which is just as good of an assumption. Again, floor is set at 1st and 4th, until the trade happens you have to assume that they aren't taking less. It only takes one stupid team, it only takes a team w/2 firsts(browns), it only takes a team to believe that this qb draft class really is weak and all of a sudden that 2nd 1st seems like a bargin for Jimmy G. They don't have to settle. Well the Bears aren't hiring McDaniels, so this becomes a moot point doesn't it?

Pace painted himself into a corner here didn't he? He didn't want a qb in the first 2 drafts when he didn't have a long term starter to begin with, nor did he have any in the works so what he wants is moot. All he has to do is sell several starters, and a young high ceiling prospect at qb in the works

If they don't take less, they might end up losing him for much less one year later. They thought that Brady would go when he is 40, but he Keeps playing and playing and there is no slowing down and decline with him.
They can't afford to sit Garoppolo on the bench with 20/year. That's not the Kind of strategy that will work.
By all reports and what we heard, Pace wanted Mariota and Wentz. He wants his guy, not just one guy.

You guys know I don't think much of Fox, but being objective about this, I really do believe that that reason Pace did not go with a QB is indeed Fox. I think that Fox told him that Cutler would be fine. Pace had a LOT of needs,so based on that, it took the pressure off for a QB and he could concentrate on the other positions. I do think you need a steady flow of QBs from the draft as NE does. However, your team needs to be in fairly decent shape in order to burn a higher pick on a guy that you do not have an immediate need for when you have lots of other immediate needs. I get it and am not sure I blame Pace. Do I think it was the right decision with the benefit of hindsight? I'm really not sure still. The only QB worth taking mid rounds was Prescott but our scouting team wiffed on him. We did not know he would be good. However, neither did any other team including the Cowboys. I keep asking myself... if we HAD picked a QB instead of someone else either last year or the year before, would we have our starter? I can't help but think no.

Both of those guys were out of our reach. If there is a guy he wants this year, he may also be gone even picking at #3. but to say you need the 1st pick to get a good guy is not a reasonable statement. We have a hell of a pick and he needs to hit paydirt with it.

Rumors say, that we could have had that #2 Overall but Pace couldn't figure out who the Rams would take. He has had no interest in Goff and it was possible Wentz is gone.
