I am going to be devils advocate here. His bar is low. Waldron was a semi disaster. So chances are he is going to look good even if he only does a decent job because Waldron was way below decent. So would we be settling on another meh coach that only really starts to show his deficiencies after a year or two?
And of course I know the flip side. If we let him go, he will end up being Belichick 2.0
I was thinking more in terms of him just getting an HC job anywhere and not necessarily here. But I admit I did think about that possibility. He won't be the sexy pick here because the team will most likely lose a lot of these remaining games (maybe all of them). And he's not a big name guy, and there will be popular big name guys available to hire, guys like Gruden, Belichick, Ben Johnson, Daboll, McCarthy, Vrabel, Kingsbury, Slowick etc. I had never even heard of Thomas Brown. The weird thing is, if he were to do some miraculous thing and the team wins 4 or 5 of these tough games against some of the NFL's best teams, will that save Eberflus and the Bears keep 'Flus while Thomas Brown is with another team as HC?
The Bears will never do this but what do you think of:
Firing Eberflus now; today is fine.
Making Brown the interim HC and let's see how we do. Make it a trial run and if it works he stays if it doesn't then no big deal because we were going to lose with Eberflus anyway.

+1 If the Bears lose to the Lions (and they probably will), then that would be a good opportunity to do that. It would give Brown 5 games to interview for the job, proving he can handle it. Let DC Eric Washington be a DC running that unit. Brown continues to call plays for 5 games as interim HC. We have Kerry Joseph, Caleb's QB coach and also Chris Beatty the WR coach - who both have OC experience at the college level and seem like sharp guys who have been working with Caleb all season long... pick one to be OC for 5 games. The team will probably lose those 5 games no matter if 'Flus is here or T.Brown is in charge. But I do believe it would be a priceless opportunity to see what we have or don't have in Brown.
Frankly, I don't know why the Bears would NOT do this. I would think it would be a good time to make the move. And honestly, it would be better for Caleb and the team... and maybe Eberflus who is dying a slow and painful death. It's hard to watch him doing the meltdown now, clearly overwhelmed and saying things that don't make sense and making in-game decisions that are embarrassing him.
EDIT: And if Brown doesn't do well, then that's fine. Eberflus won't do any better, and probably worse than Brown. I see no significant downside to this.
He just turned 35 years old... it seems so young with these HC hires now. I'm not saying don't hire him... just that for an old fart like me it seems so young to be a head coach in the NFL.
LINK Bills OC Joe Brady given top odds to land head coaching job that isn’t even open yet One sportsbook has Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady as the favorite to land the Chicago Bears' head coaching gig.

This to me is the most sound idea. The players are all starting to talk smack about Flus on radios and other outlets. It might be the best thing not just for the team but Flus and his Family as well.
If Brown looks good these last few games then keep him. He has done it before so I am sure he can handle the pressure. What is the harm? We find out if Brown is the guy or we set our sights on another sucker to lead Da Bears.

On yesterdays CHGO show Carm had an interesting tidbit where he said he had it "on good authority that Thomas Brown is here because of Ryan Poles". They went on to then discuss "did Poles want Brown, but Flus wanted Waldron?". Again, the GM's job is to give his HC what he says he needs to be successful, so Poles could have given his opinion, but at the end of the day its Flus' staff...but perhaps Poles hedged his bets by saying "Brown is going to be your pass game CO."
Having said that, it seems that Poles is high on Brown. Does that mean he'll fire Flus on Friday if we get smoked Thursday to get a look at Brown as an HC? I don't think so necessarily, because he may already believe he can handle it, but it wouldn't shock me. As I've said, the more I read about Brown, the more impressed I am with him. After hearing him talk, I get why he's been an HC candidate, interviewing for the Titans job last off season and the Texans job the year before that. The Dolphins also interviewed him for their HC job when he was with the Rams before they went with Mike McDaniels.
Thats pretty good company to be in as its not like those 3 teams went with a worse option per se. Also, all 3 of the guys hired in those jobs were also young when they got the jobs. Demecco I think was 38 when he got the Texans job, Callahan 39, and I think McDaniel was 38 or 39 when he got his HC gig. So as it stands right now...I'd be perfectly fine with Brown getting the job next year if Caleb continues to grow and improve and the offense performs. He seems to have the right attitude needed and will be demanding of the players. He'll hold them accountable, and he's shown he'll hold himself accountable.

Not sure what to believe. Just saw the article in another thread saying that Poles was the lone holdout in terms of wanting Flus back. And I have kind of believed all along that he did want him back. Who knows

Poles seems to be always looking forward. Hopefully he will start to see an OL problem in the horizon.

I thought Poles and Flustered were on the same page? How can they be if Poles is looking forward and Flustered is looking inward?
Neither one knows they both have their heads in the sand. and up their asses. at the same time.

I know nobody wants to admit it, but it was understandable why Flus was back this year. He showed promise getting the team last year to over perform. Add in the McCaskeys were never firing him with 3 years left on his deal, and never hiring Harbaugh, nor do I believe Harbaugh ever had any interest in coming here and coaching essentially an unknown at QB over going to LA and coaching Herbert...who exactly were you firing him for? Do I think Poles wanted him back? Sure. Do I think Poles wouldn't have upgraded if he had a legit option to do so? Based on his history I'm not so sure he wouldn't have. Either way, he's shown a willingness to move on from mistakes.
Either way, him wanting Flus back after last year has nothing to do with Brown and Poles wanting him here.

I agree with all of that. And also I keep thinking that we don't know who wanted what, as far as George, Warren, Poles and Cunningham. People are just angry with where we're at right now and want to fire everyone.
