The Bears (I believe) have better overall talent than the Commanders. Not great talent but better than Washington talent. Our coaching is not as good as the Commanders. My initial reaction to this game had these 5 main factors contributing to the loss:
- The team wasn't ready to play this game. That's on Eberflus.
- Players were undisciplined and committed killer penalties. Even with bad Bears teams you usually (at least) see disciplined players. An undisciplined team is usually a symptom of bad coaching. These players are better than what we saw today. They gave the game away.
- The play calling on offense was below average. That's on coaching.
- Caleb had a bad game today. Inaccurate passes. He took a step back today in his development.
- The team did not deserve to win this one.
I am trying to keep an open mind regarding Matt Eberflus. I do want to see the season play out and then make up my mind on the coaches and players - and especially on Eberflus. I was so looking forward to this game because I did believe it would be tougher than a lot of the fans were wanting to admit - and it would give us a better idea of whether or not Eberflus was worth keeping here or not. He had 2 weeks to prepare for this game. He did not have his team ready to play. Washington is a decent, "good but not great team" that was so beatable today. We have 10 more games to watch. The coaches won't get fired mid-season because the Bears don't do that. But holy cow this is going to be a butt-ugly thing to watch once the NFCN teams play us.
But again, its the way they lost. and IMO thats on coaching. Personal fouls, weird OFF play calls, seemingly no adjustments by the OFF coaching staff and a complete FUBAR at the end, right on time.
Yes the OL is terrible, but where are the scheme assists?
Why on 3rd and longs are there too many WRs running around open?
Where was Sweat on the final play if its true he wasn't on the field?
I was scared of Johnson, O'Connell/Flores and LaFluer before, now I'm terrified.
+1
I rant about the offensive line like a lunatic here. LOL, I probably embarrass myself doing it so much. But this is a classic example of how two things can both be true at the same time. Yes, the offensive line needs to be better. I 100% believe that. But we also have a mediocre (at best) coaching staff. I really don't believe they have this roster playing up to their talent level on offense. By now we have watched a lot of Bears offense film breakdown by people who have coached and played at a high-level in the NFL - and they point out how this offense isn't that good - and some of these schemes are downright bad from a schematic point. That's not on players. That's ultimately on Matt Eberflus and his OC. The OL can be fixed. The coaching? I don't know if the Bears can/will bring in the right coaching to get this team where it needs to go.
