We are just smarter than other teams. We were smarter with keeping Lovie longer than Tampa did. We were also smarter in hiring Emery, who in turn was also the smartest guy in the room when he hired Trestman.
Sorry. Elway might be a 24 karat dick (maybe even a whole bag of 'em) but the dude knows football. Certainly more than Ted Phillips does. I'll take his letting go of Fox as better judgement than our keeping him.
I love how the Browns have become the cautionary tale or bogeyman-franchise. Can't change HCs because look what happens!! You become the Browns....[insert scary sound here]
But lets ignore the Jags and the Rams. Good thing Bradley and Fisher stuck around huh? Change is bad huh?
Exactly, Brasil. Each situation is unique and you have to evaluate the whole thing. You have to have the ability to be able to realize the pertinent data points and project those. Anyone can wait until someone fails and then claim that they need to be replaced. That's easy. It also uses up precious rebuilding years.

"Bag O' Dicks" the new party game sensation. Bigger than Trivial Pursuit and Dirty Minds!!!!
IMHO the biggest difference between the two besides that fact that one actually played the game and knows something about it vs another who knows all about spread sheets and jack shit about spread offenses is this.
Elway runs his team to win Super Bowls. Ted Phillips would prefer to avoid winning them because as his mentor Mikey learned they cost the team more in players salary demands afterwards than it's worth. Phillips actually feels the Bears as a family owned team cannot afford to put out the cash needed to win and he's basically said that on several occasions if you listen to what he actually says.
He just did it again when he said his role is to work with their corporate partners to build the Bears "brand" and that winning is nice but not necessary to succeed in building that brand. How's that for a take what we give you and like it to your paying customers. Now you know why I want that asshole gone. He's no more then Mikey McCaskey v2.0 and he can't run a football team to save his soul.

I'm curious to know how the salary cap plays into Bars higher office thinking.

That would be my point too BB. Bad marriages don't get better just because you buy a nicer house (new QB) or drive a better car (another pass rusher) or take a sea cruise (better secondary). If it's not a fit it's not a fit and I do have a reasonable amount of personal experience with that.
I don't think John Fox is a great fit for young team because most of his success has come with more experienced teams and QBs. If Cutler is traded Fox is surely not the guy I want as HC of a team trying to develop a young passer because in his entire career he never has. So it seems to me we have a choice and unfortunately I also believe it's mutually exclusive.
If we keep Fox then we should keep our best vet QB which is Cutler but I also believe that marriage has been irretrievably broken so one or the other will most likely have to go and no matter how you slice it I think were screwed.

Elway has done a great job for the Broncos. Wouldn't it be great to have a guy like that? He has made some real gutsy moves.

In reality the salary cap is little more than a bookkeeping system to assure some parity between teams and over a four year period teams must spend 89% of the cap cumulatively or be penalized. So if for instance the total cap over 4 years was $600 mil ($150 mil per year) then a team must have spent $534 mil total.
But cap spending is not cash spending which can and often is far more due to guarantees, cap or salary deferral, and dead money. This piece has some examples of that.
What Phillips and the Bears dislike is agreeing to the huge guarantees in cash it takes to get top UFAs. Those guarantees tie players to that team for long periods of time or they create cap problems due to dead cap space if the player is traded or released. Listen to all of the bitching about Cutlers deal and what an albatross it's been in some fans minds even though by comparison it's been a very reasonable deal which made him cheaper and easier to trade or keep over time.
The Packers are one of the few teams who have managed to remain a consistent winners without spending big in FA but that's been made possible mainly due to having a QB like Aaron Rodgers and playing in a weak NFCN division. Outside of the division they aren't as competitive and the other part is catching up to them slowly but surely. The bottom line is in the NFL you have to spend big to win big now OR get incredibly lucky as GB did with Favre and Rodgers as back to back HOF QBs. How often does that happen?

That's why we need a top Exec like that but I doubt the McCaskey will ever open up to it. Elway also had the access to Pat Bowlen's checkbook which Teddy Bears will never allow and it's also the reason I believe they keep him as a buffer.
Face it guys. The McCaskeys run the team in a manner that pretty much assures they cannot compete with top teams with owners like Bowlen, Kraft, Jones, and a few others who do realize that you either have to draft and sign FA talent extremely well and stay both healthy and lucky to win consistently or you have to buy victories and championships. This isn't the 1980s anymore.
Gutsy isn't even a word in the McCaskey vocabulary coming from a family who banned the Honey Bears 30 years ago because it wasn't proper for a family oriented experience. I guess when Teddy Bears is out looking for corporate partners he can probably cross PornHub off his list then huh? LOLOL

Ya never know...maybe the Vikings will decide to play their own defense against us like they did last week instead of listening to Zimmer....but I guess Zim gets the benefit of the doubt and is on solid ground?

Change is fine if you change for the better. Constant change alone just keeps you in an endless loop of fail. Fire fox and get someone better is fine. It's that "getting someone better" thing that has been tough so far for us - and yes for teams like the Browns too.
