The iOL sucked on Sunday against one of the NFL's best DT duo but before everyone starts trying to rewrite history, let's be clear.
Odunze was THE CLEAR BPA at #9 when the Bears picked. No doubt about it whatsoever. The team had a major need too. We have sucked at WR for decades, Keenan Allen is probably only here for a year, and RO was the missing piece in that he's a contested catch monster and that's something we didn't have with DJM and KA.
There was no OL, much less iOL, left on the board who was worth taking there. In fact, iOLs rarely get drafted that high by any team. Perhaps Poles could have traded down but that's just speculation--none of us know if there was a good offer on the table or not.
My main quibble with Poles on this issue is that he hasn't been able to shore up the iOL outside of the draft. He had other options available at C in FA. Same thing with G. I think he could have and should have done more outside of the draft.
Regardless, I am not panicking yet. The DT duo they faced on Sunday was one of the league's very best. There was definitely some confusion on a few plays (they set for pass blocking on a running play twice) and CW clearly had some opening day jitters that caused him to overcook a couple throws he normally makes easily. As soon as Ryan Bates is healthy I want to see him in there preferably at RG (I'm fed up with Nate Davis) and then we will have a better picture.
0 people think they should have stayed at 9 and taken an IOL.
Except they are. Maybe not here, but those hot takes are out there. "Poles should have drafted OL instead of Odunze" kind of revisionist history stuff.

saying he should have passed on Rome isn't the same as saying they should have drafted a OG/OC at 9. If Rome is some kind of universe altering unable to pass surefire all pro future HoF'r that people make him out to be, there would have easily been a trade partner to move back and gain additional picks that would allow you to take a OG/OC farther down the draft + additional picks that would allow you to also address a WR that could be a #3 that could build into a #2.

Why? Because he sprained his knee? Man, tough crowd.

No, because the iOL sucked and RO only had 1 catch. BTW, Marvin Harrison, Jr. had only 1 catch too and he's playing with a vet QB.

Every year most NFL offeneses look bad 1st couple weeks. Especially the ones without their core returning. This is all about media and need to make content EVERY day ALL DAY between games. It feels like every ex-QB now has a platform to share their opinion on every young QB. Relax, give it a few games and watch the offensive line gel along with QBs and skill position players get timing and rythm. Crazy to think Caleb and this offense was going to do a 180 in the off season and show out in Game 1. First week of the season is rarely memorable. **exception Nate Davis is a legit concern
Perhaps taking someone else instead of Booker would have helped. I understand the Booker pick, but to me, IOL would have served us better.
I was stunned when he didn't take iOL in round 3 instead of a pre-injured OT from a small school like he did. I have read that Kiran can play guard too as soon as he's ready. Problem is, he missed almost all of camp and PS so he won't be "ready" for a long time.
