The problem with Velus is that he has stone hands. He cannot catch a pass. He's a liability on special teams.
Now if he's a RB, that kinda telegraphs what we're going to do when he enters the game.
I'd prefer not to have the liability out there because who cares how fast he is if he can't hang onto the ball?
My hope is that he has good ball security as a running back, versus being a WR. Let him be a complete RB who gets to do like he did in preseason and run between the tackles as well as hitting the edge. And hey, let him to the occasional RB catch, like any RB. If they use him like that, then every time he is on the field the defense has to account for him in a special way or he can take it to the house like he did in preseason. I don't expect him to get a lot of carries (he just won't). But he is just one more weapon in a big box of weapons this season. I wish the Bears had made him an RB before now... he just seems more natural there.

If it was up to me, I'd rather see Velus get 5 carries a game or whatever the number is they're targeting for Roschon (who had a few moments but was underwhelming and not nearly as hyped). I think Poles & friends were as disappointed in Roschon as I was - given the high price they paid for Swifty.
Anyway... Velus'speed is a differentiator...he can easily accelerate past other fast men. I absolutely think he's capable of catching the ball out of the backfield enough to keep the team 2 dimensional. I think Getsy was just afraid to take any chances with the guy catching brutal, off-target short passes from JF1, with his own job on the line. But I don't think Waldron will hesitate at all especially with Caleb putting the ball in better places for a guy to make a play. If they put Velus in toward the end of any half and with the opposing defense maybe tiring after a long series or after a quick turnover... I'd see if they can handle Velus. I bet Waldron does too.

It's a little bit disorienting.... This team has so many offensive weapons.... I still have a little bit of a hard time considering all the ways we have to attack a defense. If they can keep CW clean, the offense is really going to be fun to watch, and the D seems able to hold it's own.
Seriously, if CW can play to most of his potential by the end of the year, we are going to be in it.

Objectively speaking, I'm forgetting that I've been a fan of this team for over 35 years.
It would not surprise me if we got to the Conference Championship Game and here's why:
1) Top 10 defense. Any team with a top 10 defense can win it all. It's entirely possible, especially so if that second pass rusher emerges, that we have a top 7 or top 5 D. That on it's own takes us to the playoffs.
2) Several elite players around CW. Moore, Allen, and Kmet are elite in their positions. The RBs are good. Odunze is a high potential rookie who can benefit from the CB1 and CB2 coverage Moore and Allen will draw. Or in a 2 WR set, Odunze gets CB2. With his contested ball rate plus his reach advantage over a typical CB2 he's going to destroy them.
3) CW doesn't need to be a top 10 QB (on his own merit) this year. CW needs to get the ball to the WRs. That's it. This isn't USC where it's him and a bunch of scrubs and he's got to play Hero Ball all game long to keep things competitive.
On paper, we have the best roster in the division. The Eagles don't scare me anymore. There are the 49'ers. That's legit. Other than that, what opponent in the NFC do you say is an automatic loss for us?
This is the most excited I've been for a season in years. I cannot wait.
If they can keep CW clean, the offense is really going to be fun to watch, and the D seems able to hold it's own.
I'd add that another key with this OL will be their run blocking. If they can do that well, then the offense will be a LOT better than if it has to rely on a rookie QB being a pass-happy guy all season long. A strong run game will be an immense help this year in particular, as CW gets acclimated to the NFL game.
I'm also betting our ST improves this year too. Especially with our new punter pinning teams deep.
Admittedly I got frustrated when Taylor was drafted in the fourth round.
You can get punters anywhere.
But here's the thing:
Ryan Poles had the draft of a lifetime already when he took CW and Odunze in the first. Poles could've drafted people off the street with the rest of the picks and he'd still get an A.
Poles has a lot of credibility with me. Rebuilding the roster. The trade down (OMG he got paid!). Trading for Sweat. I don't care about the Claypool trade or drafting Velus. Every GM makes mistakes, but Poles' Body Of Work is extremely impressive.
Given that, if Poles believes that Taylor is a transformative guy that can give us a consistent incremental 10 to 20 yards of favorable field position every time he punts (hopefully never because we score) then I believe that Ryan Poles made the right decision.

If Jenk stays healthy, this OL should be stellar at run blocking and powerful on both sides. I'm bullish on Swift and Herbert. I definitely want to see Velus get regular touches like we used to see with Pinky and Mark Green (who were great COP backs).
This OC knows how to run the ball and if preseason was any indication intends to use play action to help Caleb. I can't wait to see how the OL does now having some continuity (4 of 5, with the one being an upgrade).

+1 This coming game against the Tennessee Titans is going to be a huge test of our OL. The Titans DL is really good this year. Scary for that matter. Our OL did not do well against our DL in summer camp. They got beat like a drum WAY too many times. They are going to have to step it up in Sundays game. I'd hate to see Caleb taken out on a cart for IR in this first game of the season.

That would put us out on the ledge even earlier than usual
