We hear this every year but our Oline isn't even that bad. Ranked #16 which is middle of the pack. We've invested a ton of resources on the Oline. If Williams can't make it, its on him. Not the offense.
16) Chicago Bears Starting five: LT Braxton Jones, LG Teven Jenkins, C Ryan Bates, RG Nate Davis, RT Darnell Wright
The Chicago Bears have used every available method of player acquisition to bolster their offensive line. Wright and Jenkins were early-round draft picks, Jones was a late-round selection, Davis was a free agent signing, and Bates was a trade pickup.
We should be giving Williams as much rep as possible. Dude is a rookie QB and needs to learn how to play the game at a high level. You don't do that by sitting out.
So when opponents blow by them, we should all chant "but your rated #16!!"?
PFF has us ranked at #11. Our Oline isn't as bad as many here think. Fields held us back with his slow reaction time when it came to throwing the ball and holding onto too long.
I 100% agree with this. We should be playing our offense more to give them reps. We have a rookie QB, rookie WR, a ton of new faces on offense including Oline, WR, and RB.
I understand 2 years ago when Fields had Mooney as his best WR who is at best a #3 WR. We have a Hall of Fame WR, a top 10ish WR, and a top 10 pick at WR who would of gone a lot higher if it wasn't for 2 very good WR prospects and 4 QBs going in the top 10. We also have a 1k back RB as well as a top 10 receiving TE.
I'm not expecting CJ Stroud 4k passing stats but I am expecting 3k passing stats with the weapons he has. His floor has to be higher than Backup Justin Fields floor.
This would be SUCH a waste of talent if Williams could not play well because of the line. We are only going to have Allen on this team for this year. Yeah, our WR room is great even without him, but for crying out loud.... I would love to see this offense working to it's potential. It could literally be one of the best in the league. I think the Loins passed on theoir curse to us.
I see Allen here for two reason.
1) Mentor Rome 2) Help a young rookie out in their first season.
If Rome is anywhere close to his draft pick. It makes zero sense to keep Allen here and not go after a Dline opposite of Sweat.
Next offseason I see them going after the line. 1 Oline and Dline from the draft and spending big on either a 1 oline/dline.
I just don't see Jenkins as a long term starter. Skilled player but is too hurt all the time.

It is most definitely that bad. The centers (both of them) have by many accounts been snapping the ball pretty badly - even into the dirt at times. Both starting guards can't stay healthy - and Nate Davis sucks even when he is healthy. Wright is getting beat like a drum (by many accounts) every single practice by Sweat (and he will face D guys in the regular season who are as good or even better than Sweat this year. Brax has been decent when healthy. Our swing-tackle Larry Borom has not been good either. So, yes, it is that bad.

Bates also left today with an injury. It's ugly
Are injuries contagious like COVID? Sheeeesh. We'll be having streetsweepers manning the O-line pretty soon. Maybe we should sit CWill for the year...

I'm not saying we can't improve but people act like we're bottom tier.
But how does what something is ranked correlate with reality? Ranking is one thing. Performance on the field is another. I will see what they do on the field and see if I think they are top third. Honestly, it's hard to fathom them being top third with the OL issues we have.

I just gave a link showing us at #11 with PFF.
I find PFF a very poor source for accurate assessment of anything OL related in particular. They are a joke. Hey, I am hoping for the best this year - and I know you are too. We will just see how the season unfolds for us. It could be good. If the OL is solid I think it will be good.

But it's not just PFF. I think it's a joke to rank ANYTHING before the season starts. In my mind (I know it's the weak link in the chain), you can only rank when you have results to compare. No games have been played so how do you know any teams individual performance - much less against another teams performance which you don't have either. The only way I believe you have any correlation to how good a unit is, if you have the very same players on the unit as last year. And even then it is a slippery slope. If all the players are veterans, you can say with some degree of confidence that the unit will perform similarly to last year. If the team is the same but there were lots of new players the last year, the unit could do much better than it did the year before so even with all the same players, the comparison may not be accurate. And that only goes as far as trying to determine how good an individual unit is, IF THE SAME AS the previous year.
Hard enough, but when you now go and try to rank against other teams that have mostly changed and have no games or stats to determine how they have performed, how do you rank one against the other? It is a fools errand. After you have a few games under the belt in a season and you have actual performance statistics on the various unts, then you can compare and rank. Right now any rankings IMO are completely meaningless and set expectations that are not based in reality, but JMO
