Here is my minimum acceptable.
It would really be hard to swallow after last years success at the end of the season, but I could accept not making it into the playoffs again this year under the right circumstances. We lost our starting QB that led us to a string of victories at the end of the season an will have a new QB. But he is a very promising QB (assuming Williams). So I am willing to accept losses at the beginning of the year as he ramps up as long as I see him flashing throughout the year and him "getting" it by the end of the year and looking like he will be able to lead the team in the future to many victories. If we are losing and he does not look good, we are in trouble. I hate losing another year in terms of the playoffs, but when you reboot the QB, you have to be prepared for that.
Of course, we can also hope for much better. Maybe he kind of "gets it" right out of the gate and he starts winning early in the season and we do make the playoffs. I mean, it happened with Stroud and when there is one, there will be more than one. Why not us? But again, I am jaded and will need to see it before I am going to believe it. Stroud is an anomaly. Does not happen a lot. But since we are now generational, it could.
So that's the worst I'd like to see and then there is the best case. Usually things fall in the middle. But definitely this season I will go through lots of popcorn

An article about realistic expectations from a first pick QB. Many of them did not see success until they went to a new team. I think that is because the first pick goes to a crappy team that does not have good infrastructure in place to support a good QB, so the good QB turns into a not so good QB (sound familiar?)
So expectations of Williams coming in and becoming a Burrows or Stroud should be tempered.... No matter how much we all want it to happen
I am just jaded. I am not from Missouri, but I could be. I am part of the "show me" crowd at this point. Not to say I am not behind him. I certainly am. Call me cautiously optimistic.
+1 And that makes perfect, logical sense. Nothing wrong with a dose of reality here. So many of these guys don't work out. Us Bears fans are painfully aware of that. We all want this guy to succeed. We will all be sick if he doesn't. We are all on the same page on this. The next step is to get him officially on the team and then watch what happens with this one. I was on the "keep Fields" bandwagon until the end. But that ship has sailed, so I'm now on the Caleb bandwagon, hoping that he can help the team be what we hope it can be. I see a lot of positives so far.
I think I am preparing myself, as best I can, to expect a learning curve with the rookie. He will have some bad games. That's what happens with rookies. When that happens we shouldn't panic and give up on the guy. I think most of us here (if not all of us) will be patient with Caleb this first season.
One side note. I also believe we will see a learning curve with the overall team because we have a lot of new/young players and some new key coaches are new to the Bears too. Eberflus as the head coach is trying to mold all of this into a championship team... Poles too for that matter. I am cautiously optimistic with them too at this point. I believe Poles and Eberflus deserve our support unless they show evidence of not deserving that support. I think that is just being fair with them.

+1 I would just add that we may see some up-and-down play this rookie season. A great game that gets us fans jacked up thinking we have it made, followed by some games that put us out on the ledge thinking the worst about this team and coaches. That is what I think we very well may see this season. I hope I keep my head about me and look for an overall improving team as the season progresses. Maybe a "two steps forward and one step back" thing. Making progress with some bumps in the road games too.

I agree. But with Flus, I am not as patient
I figure he came here as a rookie HC in a tank year (gutted roster). Last season, his 2nd, he has 30 new young players and it became apparent that he whiffed on the Getsy hire (another rookie coach as an OC). I think most, if not all of us, liked the Getsy hire initially. He came from a good offense scheme that has "owned" us for years. But in hindsight it wasn't a good hire.
This will be his opportunity to settle the team down with a roster that is pretty much totally rebuilt (a good thing) and a rookie QB1. He took the team from a 3 win season to a 7 win season. Now (even with a rookie QB1) we should see continued improvement. I think we will. I will be surprised if we don't.

Both his coordinators were bad hires. 2 out of 2. How often does that happen?

I have hired and fired a lot of people over many years. The DC hiring and failing could happen to anyone. Allen Williams has been coaching for 30 years, since 1992 (NFL coach for over 20 years at that point) and nothing surfaced in those years to indicate the guy was a problem anywhere. I know first hand how an employee can get past extensive background checks and fail. The Getsy hire looked good to all of us, until it proved to be a bad move. If this happens again, then that would be a bigger deal. But I'm not concerned (at all) over those two bad hires.

I think you always gotta put an asterisk on expectations for a rookie QB, no matter who he is.
But yeah you're right, usually the team drafting one at #1 is a really shitty team that's nowhere near contending. Bears OTOH have a solid defense and good stable of offensive weapons, esp if we get Rome. We are a way better roster that most teams picking at #1.
I'm not gonna freak out if year 1 is rough at QB but I also think 3500 yards passing isn't too much of an ask either.
