no, no he didn't get greedy. There was no better offer, it didn't exist. There was no market for JF1, bc he's not seen as a starter in the NFL, he's seen as a backup. Learn from what you've seen previously on the Bears. Orton, Rex, Cutler, Mitch. Learn from what you saw this year in the trade/FA. 32 NFL teams are telling you he's not seen as a legit starter, b/c he's not.
If he was seen as a starter someone would have traded a ton for him. Even Pitt doesn't see him as a starter, they signed Russell for that role. Backups don't net you day 1 or 2 draft picks.
I forgot to add Howell to my list, and Seahawks are (unfortunately) going to have him as their starter following Geno. And the Steelers will have Fields as their starter following Russ. It could even happen this year, if Russ is injured. If he plays well, that would blow your mind.
I don’t know the Eagles offer, but I’d bet it was better than a 6th round pick that Poles turned down.
You've cracked the code, all backups are eventual starters when the starter gets hurt! That is genius level intellect David.
Yes, you have. I just don't agree with you. I am open to it if I see him play and fail in Pittsburgh, but until then, I will keep "living in the clouds". He will probably be a backup to Wilson, but might be rolled out for certain plays. But Wilson is not who he was and they do not have a lot invested in him. It is possible that if Fields outplays him, he would be a starter.
It is possible and maybe its competition. The fact that we got such a low pick shows us his value in the NFL. No GM/HC/OC wants him as a starter. They saw the same tape we did. He's not a starting QB.
You have to be a passer in the NFL. Total offense is meaningless.
Poles would of been an idiot to pass up on Williams with the #1 overall pick. I have a strange feeling we're going Oline with our second first round pick. If that's a tackle or trading down for a center. We're building a real team around Williams.
Our future looks so good now.
He still may pass on Williams. We simply don’t know. As I commented earlier in this thread, it was time to move on. This is Poles team now, no excuses.
Do you have actual evidence of this? Do you know what that offer was?
Dan Garanziano said on ESPN Sportscenter that he talked to “several sources around the league” that Eagles tried to get Fields before they settled for Pickett. Fields would be the perfect backup for Hurts. I don’t know exactly what they offered, but they paid a 3rd and a 7th for Pickett. I gotta believe they offered at LEAST that for Fields. The problem with Poles is that he sets his own mind on what a player is worth and doesn’t move until it’s too late. I think that’s what happened here, but we’ll probably never get the full story.
I believe Pittsburgh traded Pickett and this years 4th and received a 3rd and 7th in return.
I cannot see this as a decent deal any way I look at it. Would rather keep him for this shit. Our draftee could get injured for God sake. Do you know that this put Fields in the same level as Dan Feeney? 6th for both of them. And he played like 8 snaps for us. And is an OC.
Cmon Poles, this is a disaster move
Honestly I gotta say that after watching this very disappointing FA unfold, if the team has not improved demonstrably this season, Poles is gone in January 2025.
51% of the OFF snaps and the 6th turns into a 4th. If we really think Fields is all that than its 100% syre to be a 4th. He should have no problem beating out Wilson right? I mean he's throwing to Pickens who this board declared to be a future GOAT/AP/HOF WR, Fields should put up +4000yds no problem. (I exaggerate a little bit...but that not much.)
Don't read this as I'm happy Fields is gone, I'm still stunned he wasn't worth a late 3rd or 4th straight out.
I agree.
And I refuse to believe that the NFL thinks Trey Lance is a better QB than Fields. How on earth did Dallas give up a 4th round pick for him?

Seriously??
I believe it. Group think in FOs means they are looking for pocket passes who can run. Fields has not shown he can be a reliable option as a pocket passes (don't care what the circumstances are--set up to fail or not doesn't matter in what people will think about him.) There were games last season when the Bear were clinging to slim leads and took the ball out of Fields' hands. (Lions, Browns...). There were games the coaching staff didn't let him throw the ball past the LOS (Vikings, Bucs...). The league sees that and it verifies in their minds that Fields can't run an OFF from the pocket when he needs to.
This could be true, it could be false. But its what the league sees. Remember the GB defenders? "If we make Fields play QB we win." I'm not arguing this with anyone, its a done debate, he's not a Bear anymore. I wish him well, but I don't care anymore. I root for the uniform.
I think Poles tried to find Fields a starting position and was asking for returns that a starting QB (solidly average starting QB) would bring. But no one wanted him as their #1 starter. So he has forced to take backup returns. In the offseason, not during the season when a QB goes down and teams are desperate, he got what he could get for a backup QB and placed him in a position where he could end up being the starter. That makes more sense to me that Poles asked for too much and hung on until the price dropped. "Use your heads guys." I don't think Poles got ripped off, suckered or anything else. He tried to get Fields into a good starting position but no one wanted him. Pure and simple. Sometimes the obvious answer is the right answer....unless you are convinced that you are 100% right all the time and the Bears FO is 100% wrong all the time...Wait I just described all of us....never mind.

I meant he could play well enough if Russ gets injured to take over the job and keep it. I also meant that Russ is on a 1-yr. contract and may retire or move to another team next year.
They tried to get Fields before they settled for Pickett, so it’s logical to assume they were willing to pay at least as much, if not more, for Fields than they paid for Pickett. Use your brain. I’m going to bed.
Again the market has been determined. Fields is a backup 6th rounder to 4th rounder at best.
So much for build a super team around Fields. He's not even a starter in the NFL anymore. We wasted two first round picks thanks to Pace on Fields.
As somebody said, I will believe that if he plays for the Steelers like Trubisky.
Well, it's over. Can't say I agree with it. Certainly think we got shortchanged. But what surprised me the most was the timing. Now everybody knows we're using #1, no more smoke and mirrors. But the best thing is no more beating of decayed horse carcasses.
There is still the carcass and it is a huge one that is C.Will. Is he able to handle the NFL, does he want to play in Chicago? Will his dad bring in a family circus?
